On the right track

You are almost right. Users should not leave their email addresses with their postings but not because of Directory Harvest Attacks. DHA (defined at http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com...970104,00.html or the PC Mag article you refer to: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1543581,00.asp) is where spammers try to guess what people's email addresses are either by having a list of likely email addresses or by going through all possible combinations of email addresses. They can do this by writing a program that mails every possible combination. Each time they get an 'Undeliverable - unknown recipient' error they know they have it wrong. If they don't get an error, they know they have got an existing email address. What you are thinking of are known simply as 'email harvesting' techniques. This is where a spammer uses a program to actually look on a Website and collect all the email addresses from it. As far as efficacy goes, DHA are incredibly inefficient as a means of gathering email addresses. I have carried out the tests and it would take my 1GHz machine almost 90 years to process every combination of email addresses to just 9 characters (totalling 113,042,595,600,896). 'Email harvesting' techniques, conversely, are efficient: since when you show your email address on your own, or other people's, Website it will tend to be one that works. Both these programs, and others, are available in my booklet 'Home made spam - how to become a spammer' (aka 'Home cooked spam - how to stop spam') from. Jonathon, I have removed the link to your booklet. I find it ironic here that you post regarding to rmoving Spam, when in fact, that's exactly what you are doing here yourself!

Apologies

You are quite right. I apologise (although I think it a little unfair you class me as a spammer for responding to someone else's enquiry with relevant information and a little more besides). Nevertheless, I won't use your forum to advertise my booklet again. Jonathan Rew |
