Windows XP should have recognized the drives and set a driver for them. You are saying "drives" so I'm guessing there are two drives not operating. That could indicate a motherboard problem. Have you taken a look inside the case to make sure they're attached to the data and power cables?

the power cables though... they are attached to the motherboard and something else that is hidden inside a steel case

you have 2 cd drives, with the power on do the trays open if you push the eject button? (they should whether the system recognizes them or not).

Are the drive jumpers set correctly? (ie; the master/slave/cs)

are the data cables installed properly, and seated snugly? (assuming these are ide drives, the red stripe on the cable should line up with the #1 pin on the drive.)

And lastly, have you checked the bios settings to see if the channel that the drives are on hasn't been disabled?

well, I took it apart once more, wiggled the wires, unplugged then blew air into the sockets... the CD drives were recognized when I started it back up.

Thank you for the help guys.
