WIndows Blue Screen Possible RAM, link to Vista Topic (per Ann Marie)

At the request of Anne Marie, posting a link to another topic under Vista. I am havinga blue screen occur repeatedly within Windows Vista SP1 on a HP laptop. She mentioned that it could be RAM related, but was not versed in that to help. Any guidance would be great. Thanks

Hi wombie25

If you could download this file and two-click it.

Say "Run" to the popup message and a Notepad will open up, copy all and paste here please.

thanks. I tried to run the file attached and in the cmd.exe window Access is Denied was written 6 times, and then Error: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

The .txt file could not be found, when asked to create a new one, nothing happened.

I'd like you to turn off User Account Control and then try my file.

Nothing nefarious there. Let's test the RAM modules, you'll need to download Memtest86.

Two choices there, ISO image for creating bootable CD (Windows - zip) will unzip an *.iso file that can be burned to a CD
or Floppy disk package (installable from Windows) creates a floppy disk.

Both the floppy and the CD are meant to boot the computer to and the test will be run from there. It doesn't matter which one you use.
Your looking for any error reports on the RAM test.

Let's run a manufacturer's test on the hard drive. Everest (in my signature below) will tell you who makes the hard drive.

Seagate has SeaTools

Western Digital has Data Lifeguard Tools

Samsung has Hutil

Hitachi has Drive Fitness Test

Open a Command Prompt
type chkdsk /r hit enter
it will stop and say chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <y/n>
type y for yes, hit enter
it will then say This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts, hit enter
close Command Prompt
reboot

You can run it on your other partition first
Open a Command Prompt
type chkdsk d: /r hit enter

You don't run any Virus security software nor malware security, why is that?
