maybe you bumped the video card when you inserted the memory?
I have done that enough times so try reseating both carefully.

Ok then the problem is different and simply non compatible ram. You probably are matching low and high density ram and my guess is what you bought is high density which is the most difficult to match. Which one, old or new has more ram chips or has them on both sides?

Sounds like you are mixing low and high density ram...does the stick that won't work have chips or ram modules on both sides or not. Density = number of chips on the RAM module. Different computers require the memory module to be built with a different number of chips. For example: there is more than one way to build a 512MB memory module: 8 * 64, 16 * 32, etc.The more chips usually the lower the density, which is a more compatible stick of ram.

Rich, the memory that doesn't work is 256 MB and has 32 x 64 chips on one side only.URL below is spec of new memory.

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=22386

Which is the same as teh original 256MB in the machine.

Sounds like the new memory is high density and that makes compatibility a problem with alot of systems.

id hate to burst ur bubble Rich, but andi said it was the same as the original ram... so to me sound slike it is NOT a compatability problem... maybe u can try the new ram in another system and see if it works, maybe its just bad.

Actually those are two different kinds of memory. Ones Kingston and the other is samsung. So yeah it could be a compatibility problem.

However that one is easily tested. Put the New Kingston in by itself and see if the PC boots. If it works then it is a compatibility problem with the old memory, but if it doesn't boot then it isn't that problem.

Most likely it is one of 2 things. Either you got ahold of some bad memory or the new Kingston is just not compatible with your system. I've had this problem with Kingston before and is why I never deal with them anymore. I only deal with Cosair etc... A bit more expensive, but never had any troubles with it.

Driv3r,
Read the following 2 sentences carefully. You willl note that Samsung is one, and Kingston is another, and therefore they are not the same, as these are 2 different companies, that by the way have different ownership.
"Original Memory is Samsung PC2100u 256mb DDR PC 2100 CL2.5"
"I have bought 2a Kingston 256mb PC2100 part number KVR266X64C25/256"
As I stated, most likely there is a problem with 2 different densities and low density ram, is always the most highly compatible, and you cannot mix the two.
Actually I have seen the same ram bought from the same manufacturere occasionally not work together as they come from different batch numbers so the safest way to have added ram work though, is to replace it all, or at least buy the same mfgr, same cas latency, and of course the same speed as Dodge suggests..

Thanks all for your help guys. I think the problem is mixing memory manufacturers.

Does the fact one type is PC2100u and the other PC2100?

Does this mean one is unbuffered and the other is buffered?

ECC and non parity or non ECC (error checking) could also be an issue, but I think it is time to return one and or use a configurator at any of the big ram sites to try to match what you need. Corsair, Crucial, Kingston and many other have configurators at their sites to help you match your motherboard or your pc to the right ram, and they usually work well.
www in front of any of those and then ".com" will take you there!
