can i use I386 to repair xp?

windows xp home, sp2, pentium 3
i'm having major problems with my pc and i'd like to know if it's possible to use the I386 folder in my computer to either repair or reinstall xp, i was not given the installation cd or a restore cd when i bought it a couple years ago, but i do have a copy of the I386 folder. if it is possible to use the I386 folder to repair windows do i simply double click the Winnt32.exe file and follow the directions? and if it's not possible how do i install linux in my pc, simply download the iso insert the disk into the drive and follow the directions?

There's good information about reinstalling XP from the I386 folder, as well as a number of useful switches, on this page.

I got a little over 300,000 hits on Google using "install xp i386 folder" as the search term.

i too have googled install xp i386 folder but some folks are saying it's not possible without the original xp cd or it's not a good idea. that's why i wanted to find out from people in the know, and speaking from personal experience this forum has some knowledgeable people that have helped me and my buddies in the past.
