USB Port Problem

USB ports-Computer operating on XP Pro, after sitting for a week, freezes up whenever a male USB is inserted in any front or rear USB port. The USB devices have been used in other computers and are OK. Drivers have been un-installed and automatically re-installed on start up. No problems apparent in Device Manager. Computer has been restored to many earlier times with no help.E-Machines support has given up and suggested taking it in to a repair shop. Any help out there? TX

No solid answer here bb513, but perhaps a look at software running in the background, virus, spyware, adware, HD space, defrag.

Do you have a lot of applications running? Start>Run> (type) MSCONFIG (enter) and take a look at the list on the startup tab.

Run Adaware and such.

I'm also wondering if you tried a USB device in those slots that had its own power supply as well what would happen.

Like I said, I dunno, just throwing out some thoughts ....

I'll try additional addware scans. Start up OK. Also went into BIOS and made sure USB was enabled. Will try self powered device. Thanks
