Unhappy Unstable 98, esp. w/games

I just got a computer for my brother, but it has problems. While using it (after 1/2 hour, say) there are fatal exception errors, or windows protection errors, or sometimes it will just restart windows. Sometimes they don't come at all. When I took it to the place I bought it, they said that it was working fine for them. I bought new RAM. Then I replaced the modem, video card, and burner,(from my working computer) but I sometimes still have trouble. I Am running Win 98SE (and have tried xp, and ME with the same problems), have downloaded and installed the newest drivers for every component, and done all of the windows updates.
It is well ventilated (a little brisk in here actually,) and all of the components are seated correctly.
The computer is new (1 month) and pretty clean inside.
Please take pity.
Its a 1.3 Ghz Duron, 256 RAM, 32mb Tnt2 video card, diamond supramax 561 voice pci modem, Amptron motherboard w/integrated sound and video (bypassed.)
Some of the errors:
Fatal exception has occurred at 0028:C16354B8 in VxD

Fatal exception has occurred at 0028:C15FCADF

Fatal exception has occurred at D322:00000039

There have been a few "Windows protection error" messages, too.

Here is my startup list info:

Also, when I am playing on the computer, games tend to run fine for about five minutes, and then freeze up. ALTCTRLDEL and ALTTAB have no effect.

I have had the same problem ever since I upgraded my computer. After troubleshooting the problem for awhile I have figured out that this problem only occurs for me when I put in 512 ram instead of 256. Until I can find a solution I've just had to keep my ram at 256 . If anyone has solution to this problem please post it. I am also running Win98SE.

Have you tried swapping out the RAM sticks, or did you just take out the second 256 stick that you put in? It could be a defective RAM stick.

All fixed and figured out.

Just in case anyone is wondering...
I took the distressed computer to a local computer store, who did an excellent job checking it out. I had a major overheating problem, perhaps caused by an error on the processor. It was the first case that any of the techs that I talked to had ever seen of a partially working processor. "Either it works or it doesn't" was the general consensus, until they checked this one out. So, long story short, the original dealer was more than pleased to replace the faulty processor (after he tried EVERYTHING else first) with an apology. I am one satisfied customer, and the computer works flawlessly now. Thanks so much for your help, its good to hear when things are simply beyond the spare time tinkerer's capabilities, and that expert help is sometimes required.
