PC Slowing Down.
Upgraded to Windows 10 some weeks ago, initially PC handled it OK but lately (over the past 3 weeks) PC is running quite slow when online. Using Firefox (have tried other browsers as well), when I change pages CPU usage hits 99/100%, main culprits are System Manager, AVG Identity Protection and Firefox. Have run MalwareBytes, Spybot and AVG antivirus but nothing found.
PC is Dell Dimension 5150 Processor: Intel Premium R D CPU 2.80GHz Ram: 3.0GB System 32 bit operating system, 64 bit based processor Any ideas? Regards. |

I think that I may have found what was causing the problem, Windows Defender had turned itself on (it was off last time I checked it), since turning it off again performance is the same as it was a few weeks ago.

Anyone got an opinion on whether Defender is better than AVG?? Disabled it on a laptop I had a few years ago as it never found anything but it was only anti-malware then.

Not sure why WD turned itself back on. That should not have happened IF AVG was still working.
I use Windows Defender (WD) on all my W10 systems and have had no problems. I have used WD since Windows 8.1 came out, and its sibling, Microsoft Security Essentials since W7 came out and had no problems with them either. That said, regardless your primary scanner, you should use a supplemental scanner just to verify nothing got by the primary scanner, or you (the user is always the weakest link in security). I recommend Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM) for that. I use MBAM Premium on my primary PC and my notebook. And I use MBAM Free on my other systems and so far MBAM has found nothing. |

Thanks for your reply, I've used MalwareBytes for some years now, also Spybot. At the moment I have AVG turned off, Defender turned on and I'm using Chrome instead of Firefox, refresh rate is much better (as AVG Identity protection isn't hogging the CPU).

I use windows defender and the free version of malwarebytes on my win10 computer. I really do not see a need for anything else for my needs. Not sure why windows defender was turning itself back on. When it does, is avg still running?

Yes, AVG was still running when Defender turned itself on, assume it was about 3 weeks ago as that's when I noticed that everything slowed down.

I can only guess that AVG stopped working, or failed to start after a reboot and WD come on. That's a good thing, IMO. But then it should have stepped back out of the way when AVG started working.
