msn messenger icon duplicates...

For some reason, I start off with one icon in the taskbar, then it keeps duplicating, until I have up to 5. However, they are all connected. So if I close one, they all close.

Here is what you can rule out:

A virus
a Warez copy of XP
a error in installation

Any help would be appreciated

You could try disabling the 'Run This Program When Windows Starts' option (Options > Preferences) and the 'Allow This Program To Run In The Background' option (same place). And completely shut down Messenger. Then try opening it again and re-checking the options. If not you could completely uninstall the program and then install it again. This usually fixes any glitches you may come accross.

Just a thought!

Thanks, but that is not solving the problem. That would only prevent it from being noticed.

p.s. I did all that at first

I definetly wouldn't uninstall it. .NEt is tied in with the XP core, and even though you can uninstall it, it is not recommended. Thats why MS makes it hard to do. MS could care less if you have a .NET passport.

Just go to run and type: ( just copy and paste)

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf

Then re-install it

Cool, that worked. After I ran the command, messenger wouldn't open at all. Then I re-installed it, and everythings fine.
