Bootup is slow

How can I remove some of the programs that load when I turn the computer on? What is needed or recommended to load? I'M hopeing I can speed up the start up, or bootup, what is the correct term for this function? After booting?, I have to close three items before starting any tasks.

Thank you, pappy:

How much memory/Ram do you have? You can find out by right clicking MY COMPUTER/properties. look down near the bottom of the window that opens..

Have you done all of your Virus/adware scans?

Go to START | RUN

type in

msconfig

Hit OK

Menu go to the Start-Up TAB

Boxes checked are program shortcuts that start with windows and run in the background. Most are not needed. If your not sure post them and we can advise.

BTW: If this just started then you need to run the scans as w1che suggested.

Hello pappy. Give this a go to my mind far less complicated than using msconfig.
http://www.windowsstartup.com/Vista.
PS it works just as well with XP.

use msconfig, then click on the startup tab. Use http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php to search for your startup item and see what it is and if it is needed at startup.

Boot up slow

You can remove this issue by simply removing unwanted items from the startup

for this go to Run > msconfig , after that a window will pop up .
go the startup of msconfig and uncheck the items from the startup which are not needed at the startup .

It will sureally resolve yout issue .

Here are some programs you eliminate from your startup:

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
Messenger
Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain)
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locater
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service (this is for the utterly pointless
"Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet (disabled for extra security)
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks)
Workstation

Hope this helps!
