You have too many stuff running.

This is what I'm using as I type;

EXPLORER.EXE
KERNEL32.DLL
mmtask.tsk
MPREXE.EXE
MSGSRV32.EXE
OPERA.EXE

With the exception of Opera, the above process are the only ones needed to run Wndows 98.

The computer for the Internet I'm using is stamped December 25, 1998 (Merry Christmas ). And! I have programs dated from 1997 - 1998

I've noticed you are using Internet Explorer 6, and AOL 9.0 Well, to be honest, those two will make your internet surfing (Do they still use that word ) a nightmare.

I was a member of AOL from 1999 - 2006 and, the highest I went to was AOL 5.0 Why? Because anything above that was super slow on my computer.

Matters will be worse if you are using AOL's virus protection. Samething applies to Internet Explorer. I was using 4.0 (Super Fast) then 5.0 (Good Speed) to 5.5 (Not Really Fast) to 6 (Extremely Slow). Do you see the picture?

As you step up in the versions the response is slower compared the previous versions on an old computer. And when you are on Dial Up, every kb counts!

Here's what I did to increase my speed;

Stop using AOL's Browser.

Stop using Internet Explorer

Start using Firefox & Opera. If you notice the version that I'm using on Firefox, and Opera, are older versions. Why? because they respond faster than the newer versions. It's not a Memory thing either. While it does prevent constantly running to the swap file when loading a lot of pictures (Like Porn ) it doesn't help on everything.

The truth is, these newer versions are looking at computers offering GHZ Speeds, and we are sitting on MHZ.

Yeah, I know. It

So, the most we can do is focus on the older versions that requires less system resources. It's not Windows 98 my friend, it's the computer Windows 98 is sitting on.

My requirements for the internet are different now than 9 years ago. So, a lot of stuff that many are going ga ga for is passe' for me. If you want to do a lot of stuff today like you did when you purchased your computer in 1999 you'll need to buy a more up to date computer.

Running same amount of processing as I'm using will help, and getting more memory will slow down the "Clatter" sound your hard drive makes. Even keeping your hard drive 80% free will do wonders. However, using software designed for a Windows XP Computer on a CPU pre dating Windows XP, will offer slow results.
