"FIX 98's GDI resources problem and then add more compatibility for newer hardware and then your pretty much done. "

Not going to happen nowshining, no matter what you want or think.

well tucker I already knew that and 98 is superior in status to or would be for any other of the most current Operating systems. And plus for support for newer hardware I meant Re-sell 98 Cds or exchange them so 98 can auto detect newer devices, however Most Manufacturers if not all do however write drivers for newer hardware for their products..

And GDI is what is really wrong with this Operating system...and that's pretty much all...

Linux maybe the answer

Maybe better of with a low capacity linux as its free and always has better help. The only thing Microsoft has many updates is for the Holes in the poor made browser engine"Exploer". I use AVANT browser but is updated all the time by the Admin, and runs on the Exploer.

Yes you will still be able to find the updates, however, in my opinion, the 1st thing you need to do IS GET RID OF ME.....it's one of the worse O/S developed and full of bugs...Some will disagree, but "98" is a far better O/S then ME, even the "95" B and C versions are better then ME.

As far as updating ME you will have to look for the updates, but will still be available...

I am keeping windows 98 and 98 is just basically 98SE or 98. I can only probably go up to only 2000 with this old machine, xp is a DELL only cd, so no go there 'cause this old machine I have now is a Hewlett packard vli8. And no I ain't upgrading until I get enought to buy it myself.

Windows ME its alright I never did really get to try it out as the emachines i had that came with it (someone donated it), only worked on an emachines but never did have any problems...

Thank you so much, Murf....I have Win XP Pro and XP Home, but I would like to keep Win 98 SE running. I have two 98 SE and both were given to me. The one I have set up is a Compaq Presario....really nice computer.

Thank you again!

well since I now have a better machine, had it for awhile=got it this month, and when I get up enough money I am going to buy XP off ebay.. I am selling computer parts cheap from my other computer that are taken apart in my local area-pickup only on a website that allows free online ads..... The only thing XP sets apart from 98, 98se or ME that helps is Resources, XP has Virtually unlimted-meaning it goes BY RAM... I only trust up to sp1 and fixes, security updates-beyond that I don't trust sp2 nor Vista...I am suspicious of them..
