Hello,
do I remove old virus protection before I install free avast and do I cut off my windows firewall first too?
Thanks!

Yup, remove whatever you already have before you install it. I don't really see any reason to disable the Windows firewall though, but others may know more about that.

I downloaded free avast, I am trying to understand some of the settings

do I want special scans under settings
such as windows explorer,I mostly use firefox

which do I pick
direct connection no proxy
proxy settings
auto detect using internet explorer settings
(I mostly use firefox)
specify proxy settings-I have no idea how.

what is slient gaming mode

what are all the different shields listed for???

any help in making sure I have this set correctly to best protect me is appreciated.
Thanks

Yes you should uninstall any previous programs, and always disable Windows Firewall. In fact no firewall is likely needed at all, as most routers have their own firewalls that need no software. However Windows Firewall should just not be used in general, it causes problems. Avast however does not include a firewall, so if you want one and your router does not have one use another software for it... mainly this would apply only if you are using dial-up.

I have been using Avast and the Windows firewall along with a router for at least three years and I haven't had a problem. I would like to see some proof that the Windows firewall causes problems.

Yep, same here on my VISTA laptop for 3+ yrs - behind a Linksys router, using avast + Windows firewall & Defender - no problems at all!
