Attempting to reset laptop

I have a laptop that I am trying to reset. It was a Windows 8.1 that was upgraded to Windows 10. Every time I attempt to reset, I get a message saying "There was a problem resetting your computer. No Changes have been made." There is no error code or anything. I am just trying to delete my files and apps and not clean the drive so that I can maintain Windows 10 but have never encountered this before. Thanks for any help!

Howdy jlogan21,

Unfortunately, the 10 upgrade just doesn't always do what MS says it is supposed to do. Why are you trying to do a Reset?

Did you arrive at the Reset option doing the shift key/Restart option? You could download a Windows 10 "iso" file and burn a 10 disk, and attempt to boot to that and do a Reset.

Hello! No major reason for the reset. My husband and I are swapping laptops and I just thought it would be easier to do a reset instead of deleting/uninstalling everything. I got to the reset option through the settings and then Recovery option. After selecting to reset, I choose just to delete my files and apps. The box comes up that says Getting things ready and hangs out for a while, then I get the error message. I didn't really want to go to all the effort of creating disks and all since it is just a swap. I guess I can just go through it manually and delete things. What is the shift key/restart option?

Left click the Start button, then click the Power button, press the Shift key and click Restart.

You'll reboot to the Options display. Click Troubleshoot, which should bring you to the Reset option.

Have you done with the reset yet? If you can't reset by removing files and apps, choose the other option and see the result whether it goes through or not.
