Problems with sound chip or maybe Peripheral Please help

Hey all.

Have just upgraded my work PC to windows 7 from XP all going smoothly except I am having trouble with sound.

Windows has picked up and installed drivers for me I have also tried a few recommended drivers from the manufactures website, and various forums. in device manager there is no problems indicated but on the speaker icon in my notification area I am getting a red cross over the speaker, when I click this I am getting a message saying..."plug in the speaker, headset or headphone. The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in. Check the connection. Proceed to next step to finish."

Now I have checked, re-seated changed for a different speaker and still no avail. And I am really at a dead end here

Few details:

- Windows 7 Prof 32 bit
- Dell Precision 490
- Sound chip, Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio
- Currently Using Microsoft High Definition Audio Device 6.1.7600.16385

I am really getting frustrated with this now and would really appreciate any help!

Hopefully this is useful info; Please let me know if you need anymore details

Hi #ELMO#. There are a few drivers here you can try. I have a Dimension E520 running Vista and was unable to install SP1 because of sound driver issues. I ended up installing the SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.6.10.0.5515, A05 driver for an OptiPlex 740 and it works ok. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and it's fine too.

Hi AnneMarie.

The v.6.10.0.5515, A05 drive didnt work unfortunatley but I had a good look though the list and eventually I found the Sigmatel A8 Works for my chip!

Yey I can now enjoy the great sounds from windows 7 =D
