BIOS upgrade

Hi guys

I`m trying to upgrade the BIOS on an old PC of mine as I think this may have something to do with the sudden disappearence of any sound from the thing. (I`ve checked the volume settings etc)

Unfortunately it is one of those TIME machines where the sound and grfx are integrated into a cheap MOBO, the make of which I can`t determine.

The BIOS id is: 62-0107-000000-00101111-071595-IRONGATE

The underline part is apparently the manufacturers id.

I`ve tried looking on motherboards.org and a couple of other sites but none of the tools on them ie ctbios etc can id my mobo.

Has anyone out there got any other ideas I can try?

Examine the motherboard carefully, in particular, between and around the PCI and AGP slots. Look for any names and/or numbers that may indicate the model number of the motherboard.

Be careful. The numbers are slightly different, which means that they are probably two different motherboards.

Its narrowed it down, I`ve managed to get a product name: MSI-6316, so it
looks like it may be a Microstar board.

I`ll have another search see what I can find

My guess then would be that it is a MSI motherboard. However, it doesn't look like they produced any updates for that particular motherboard past the initial manufacture.

Here's the manual. Check it out to determine if the motherboard is in fact this one.:

Here's the location of the BIOS updates for it. As you can see, there is no updated BIOS for this motherboard beyond it's initial release:

Might do but the link doesn`t seem to be working.

I may just have to shell out for a new mobo, like I said its an old system and probably past its use by date.

Before you flash the bios I suggest you fully understand that if something goes wrong, your computer can be turned into an expensive doorstop.

A big AMEN to this. Be sure to read everything carefully and make extremely sure you have the right mb with the right flash. If you are not sure about anything, do not do it.

Yeah I know the wrong BIOS can cause a major SNAFU, kinda why I think upgrading the mobo and a new CPU is the way to go.

Two problems to consider in your case. The most important is the CPU. I can't think of a single motherboard manufacturer that still makes SLOT A based motherboards. Those CPU have been out of production for quite some time now. The second is the BIOS can't be updated since they never released a newer BIOS to update to.

My thinking exactly which is why I was thinking of getting a new AMD motherboard and CPU, which ones though. I was thinking maybe one of these, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Other.html. One of the Leadtek ones possibly.

I`ve not really kept in touch with how things are going in the computer world for the past year, for one reason or another, so if you know of an alternative motherboard/CPU that would be good for a typical home PC set up please let me know.
