Unhappy Device not accessible ,not ready

I have a Win98, 266 MHz, 128Mb ram Packard Bell that I wanted to put a CD-RW into. I set the jumpers on both devices correctly but when I went to hook them up I saw that I had a one device cable. So I swapped out the cable for Master- Slave IDE cable and hooked them up. Now the "My Computer" window recognizes that they are there but when I click on either one I get "Drive not accessible, Device not ready" I changed back to the one device cable and now that won't be recognized either. Any ideas? Thanks

Try here, it is a European link but you may get some help from the fora.
