Lightbulb win 2000 tweaks

there is a *great* thread in the xp forum containing loads of tweaks people perform to improve their system (more ram, speedier internet, faster boot, etc.)

i was wondering if there were any similar tweaks for win2000?

if so, i think it would be nice if we could make a list here for everyone to benefit from. (:

cheers,

Great Idea

I change the title of the thread to hopefully bring more folks in. Hope you don't mind.

Here are some:

Services

Usually by default many Windows services start that are not needed for a home user. Telling Windows not to load some of these can speed your machine up considerably. The list below describes some. It's recommended that you set them to "manual" and not "disabled". A manual setting will usually still allow the service to start if the system requires it.

Remember that each PC is different and some situations will require these services and some will not! Use discretion when playing around with them and make sure you have backups, as (like playing with the registry) a wrong move can render your machine unusable!

Here is an excellent site for tweaking Services

The Group Policy snapin should not be used by beginners :

Enable Group Policy Editor (Requires Admin rights) - On some installations particularly OEM installs the Group Policy Editor shortcut will not appear in the Administrative Tools.

Here's how to create it.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools

Right click an empty area in the Administratve Tools window.

Click New then Shortcut.

In the box entitled "Type the location of the item" copy and paste this line in :

%SystemRoot%\system32\gpedit.msc

Click Next.

Give the shortcut the name Group Policy.

Then click Finish.

Stop OpenGL Games in Win2K From Screen Refresh Defaulting to 60Hz

If you're running OpenGL games in Win2K and you're running a graphics card from Nvidia, such as TNT or Geforce, you can edit the installation file for the driver to remove the 60Hz option in the resolution you play in.

Doing so forces the game to run in the next higher refresh rate (e.g., 70Hz). To get even higher refresh rates, remove higher rates (e.g., 70Hz) to force games to run at 75Hz.

The one drawback to this solution is that you then can't use the 60Hz refresh rate even in Win2K because you've disabled 60Hz for the specific resolution.

Reduce Network Delay

When TCP/IP network activity is light, delays may be encountered with the default request

buffer size (4356 decimal).

The range of this parameter is 512 - 65536 bytes. In most standard Ethernet environments, 14596 (decimal) is a better choice, if the memory is available.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanServer\Parameters and Add Value name SizReqBuf as a type REG_DWORD.

Restart the computer.

Lightbulb Adobe programs running slow in Win2k?

The following answer I found in the Adobe help forums, and I post it here because it was a very annyoing problem I ran into, even with a newer version of Norton (which since then I have replaced with QuickHeal). Maybe it'll help someone else:

Hourglass Cursor Appears Repeatedly in Adobe Application in Windows 2000 or NT 4.0

Issue

When you edit a document in an Adobe application (for example, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign) in Windows 2000 or NT 4.0, an hourglass cursor appears repeatedly, and the application responds very slowly.

Detail
Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows NT or Norton Utilities 2001 for Windows 2000 is installed.

Solution

Add *.lst to the Exclusions list in Norton Protection:
1. Exit from Illustrator.
2. Right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin.
3. Click the Norton Protection tab.
4. Click Exclusions.
5. In the text box, type *.lst (where "l" is a lowercase "L").
6. Click Add (Norton Utilities 2.0), Select (Norton Utilities 2001), or Insert (Norton Utilities 2003), and then click OK.
7. Click OK in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin Properties dialog box, and then restart your computer.

Additional Information

Some Adobe applications use Adobefnt.lst files to quickly gather and store information about available fonts. Norton Protection, a component of Norton Utilities, protects certain file types so you can recover them if they are deleted. By default, Norton Protection protects *.lst files; when an Adobe application attempts to access Adobefnt.lst files, Norton Protection intervenes, slowing the application's performance. If you add *.lst files to the Exclusions list, Norton Protection doesn't protect Adobefnt.lst files or intervene when an application attempts to access them.

Cool Windows 2000 Tweaks/Tricks

Using MSCONFIG to Change the Programs Starting Automatically.

You can now use the MSCONFIG.EXE that comes with Windows XP.
Download the one from the full release product(64K)

It also lets you change the Services and BOOT.INI file as well.

If you like to use MSCONFIG from Windows 98, you can still use it with Windows 2000.

Just copy the file to a place in your path (e.g. \WINNT)
You will get an error about a file Regenv32.exe. It will work fine without it.

Increasing File System Caching

To increase the amount of memory Windows will save for locked I/O operations:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management
Edit the key IoPageLockLimit
4096 - 32megs of memory or less
8192 - 32+ megs of memory
16384 - 64+ megs of memory
32768 - 128+ megs of memory
65536 - 256+ megs of memory

Increasing System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance
by having the core system kept in memory.

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive
Set the value to be 1
Reboot the computer

Disabling Dr. Watson

If you want to disable Dr. Watson program errors from generating log files:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion\ AeDebug
Set the string Auto=0
To re-enable it, run drwtsn32 -i
Note: If you do want to use Dr. Watson, you can change the default settings by running drwtsn32

Enabling CD AutoRun

To enable CD's automatically running when you insert them:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ CD Rom
Make sure the key reads Autorun=1

Starting Programs Automatically at Each Command Prompt

If you want to start a program (like DOSKEY) or set an environment variable each time you open a command prompt:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor
Create a String key called Autorun
Give it the value of the command you want to run
Multiple commands need to be separated by a double ampersand (&&)

Renaming the My Computer Icon

To rename the My Computer icon to the name of the user that is logged on:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Change the "My Computer" at end of @C:\WINNT\system32\shell32.dll,-9216@1033,My Computer
Press the F5 key to refresh the desktop and the new name will show up.

Quick Windows2000 Shutdown/Restart

To do a quick shutdown of Windows2000:

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Hold the Control key while you click on the Shutdown button

A warning box will come up stating:
"If you continue, your machine will reboot and any unsaved data will be lost. Use only as a last resort."

Fix Browsing Delay

If you experience a 30 second or so delay when browsing to Windows98 or WindowsME computers, delete the following registry key on the Windows2000 computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer / RemoteComputer / NameSpace {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

How to change the size of the virtual memory paging file

1) Open System in Control Panel.

2) On the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and under Virtual memory, click Change.

3) In the Drive list, click the drive that contains the paging fileyou want to change.

4) Under Paging file size for selected drive, type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

*If you decrease the size of either the minimum or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases typically do not require a restart.
