DVD-ROM problem

Hey everybody

This is the second problem i've had so far with windows vista (32-bit Business edition), my DVD-ROM isnt working. The driver is installed however there is an error somewhere along the line, i get an error code 39 when i look at the device. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

The DVD-ROM that i'm using is made by Samsung (Cant remember the exact model name, i'll dig it up) it's pretty new and i went with samsung because i've had good reliability from then, i certainly didnt expect a problem with their hardware.

Please note, my DVD-ROM is displayed in my bios, and i can boot from CD or DVD, so it looks to be a problem with Windows Vista.
note2: model is a Samsung SH-S182D

Thank you in advance!

- Daniel

Start
Run...
type devmgmt.msc click OK

Have you tried right-clicking, Uninstall, and reboot?

Some Vista users, with an optical drive recognition problem, have been applying firmware updates
to their drives and getting good results. Not all drives will have firmware but it's worth a check
for yours.

Everest will show you the make and model of the drive. Post that here and someone will put a link
up if there is one.

There are 5 firmwares for that drive. Samsung isn't clear on the dates (all have same date) of the
firmwares as to which is the newest. Normally the largest number (SB04) is the latest. Each
larger version number seems to be 1 Kilobyte bigger than the one before it. It's all very unusual
but here are all 5 of them.

Now none of those are label at Samsung as Vista firmware, they are all labeled as Win 98SE/ME/2000/XP
but I wouldn't worry about applying them.

Stick any DVD in the drive (if the tray works) and try it again.

Check your controllers is DMA enabled? Device manager right click on the controller that the DVD is hooked up to..

In Device Manager (devmgmt.msc in Run...) it should be under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
