vista64+2x8800gtx's=bah!
hey there, this might be a long winded explanation, but I will do my best not to leave out any details so that the problem can be narrowed down. Firstly, I will give you my computer spec's:
Quad core 2.66ghz 8MB processor (64 bit) + nice big heat sink PN2-SLI2 ECS motherboard (ecs isnt as bad as it was a few years back) 4 gigs corsair 6400 ram 2 x 8800gtx 786MB video cards (and a lot of fans) normal sata hard drives + Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition 1x 24" 2407 DELL @ 1920x1200 + 1x22" LG @1680x1024 (secondary) so I built this beast from the ground up and I loved it (1 video card) My motherboard came with 1 sli connector. the 8800gtx video card has two sli connection ports (but this is not a problem because I believe the card uses only one of them) then I added the second video card using nvidia 64-bit drivers and connected the two video cards using the sli chip and digging through the right-click >> Nvidia control panel to enable sli connection (it pops up when it thinks you have another sli card installed). NOW NOTE: the first video card is the xfx nvidia 8800gtx, and the second one is a leadtek winfast px8800gtx. Different companys but same model. What gave me confidence that these would work is that they can both be run independently with the nvidia.com drivers (i say drivers because there are about three for vista-64 that seem to work, one of which works outright, one of which kills my right-click-Nvidia control panel, and another of which give me b.s.o.d.). So with a very loose logic it would seem that if my computer sees them as the same item they should link in a fashionalble way, eh? So whenever I go to sli these two peices of hardware together the nvidia>>control panel thingie says "Okay you're sli'd" and when I reboot (I think it did not shut down proper), It gets all the way up to where that little vista logo should be radiating vista goodness into the awe strucken user anticipating the second coming of Bill Gates. But no such luck. It will hault, think a little bit every once in a while and never ask you to login. Things to note: When first installing my 1x8800gtx it haulted here for an obscene ammount of time before working normally, and now it does the job fine. 2x8800gtx's I went the the store came back and it didn't load, waited longer, still didnt load. It ALWASE freezes before windows starts. next thing to note: keep in mind how new all of these products are, but I tried EVERY driver available and they have been out for quite a long time. You can read forums complaining about vista+8800gtx's drivers all the way back to late 2006. Another thing to note: I tried assuming the video was just shot and typed in my password normally as if it were entering windows with just my monitor dead, but again no such luck, hard drive doesnt even think, the error is much further in my computer then just the video.. strange how a video card could prevent a login, or windows loading. Last thing to note: Note that where it chooses to freeze is at the first point when higher level graphics are implemented. The video bios bootup only says 786MB video card (this may be how sli works I have no basis for comparison). It gets all the way up to after the little windows load bar.. and goes blank... I thought it was the px8800gtx this problem was so persistant and seemingly deeply rooted, so i returned it and got another one only to find the same problem again. My next step is to return it YET AGAIN and get an xfx8800gtx instead. PS: heat is not an issue. I have a GIANT fan turning this thing into a huge wind tunnel when im testing this stuff. Now im not asking for anyone to tell me the "answer" to my problem, but some opinions or new ideas as to where the root of this error might be originating at would be invaluabe. Thank you for your time, feel free to ask me to clarify anything, BYE FOR NOW!!!! |

UPDATE:
I solved the problem, thought it might be good for people to know when a similar problem occurs how to fix it.. Problem: the dual monitors, yeah, believe it or not having two monitors enabled with 2 sli cards (i suppose) will cause the image blackout that I described. The fix: All i did was uninstall the drivers (dont delete them when it asks) for BOTH my 8800gtx's (as they appeared in my device manager (dont worry this will only lower your resolution not cause a blackout. And I did this with no sli bridge, just the 2 cards. When I rebooted it asked me politely if it may give me a back rub  and install my 8800gtx for me, so it did, and I let it, and it was good, and we rebooted again together. When I awoke and my computer has booted it said, hey buddy how about that other foot? and installed the other 8800gtx in the same way it did earlier, and it was good, and we rebooted together. Now I turned off the whole system, installed the sli bridge (into either of the two slots available, I chose the inner one), and now when it boots it gets all the way into vista. The purpose of uninstalling the drivers was to clear the video card settings, otherwise just disabling the second monitor might do the same trick ALSO: I was able to recreate the blank screens when I said let there be light on the second monitor... then everything went black and it acted exactly as it first had with the original error. BUT: To my slight distress there is a NEW error. With this error when I boot I get nothing, not even a green monitor light on the monitor. Basically my monitor said my computer isnt even alive. On the second third and fourth boot trying to get to these forums it would hang at bios. Finally at the fifth boot I got into windows. Similar problems occur with every boot. NOW it sounds like im dealing with a ram problem. |

Those are some hefty issues my friend.
I would run memtest86 to test out the ram. Run it for a considerable amount of time or until it produces errors. Most run it overnight to a full 24 hrs. Check the hard drives. SLi is in beta form with the nVidia drivers. So this could be the root of your problems. What is your PSU and how many 12v rails and of what wattage is it? This could also be causeing you some problems. |

hmm okay ill get back to you after i run memtest86, as for the hard drives that might be a problem but I doubt it.. I could check and see but that will be a pain so i might put that off as a last resort. My psu is of 1000watts so i cant imagine that being the issue. I'll get back about the memtest86

Even if it is 1000watts, that doesnt meant its not a crap PSU that actually does work at its specified voltage. It could be a no name PSU that is branded by someone else.

it is not a crap psu. BFG.

Sorry to say but that is a crap PSU. Just because BFG is reputable in the video card business, does not mean the same goes for their PSU's.
Reputable PSU's are like, OCZ, Forton, ThermalTake, Cooler Master, Hiper, PC Power and Cooling, and some Sunbeam PSU's. |

Okay big guy im sure my psu is made of donkey dung and squashed aphid seeds and molded with giraffe piss held together by rotten fortune cookies. But I did fix my problem. It was the heat of my quad core cpu, which im sorry to say is much nicer then yours, combined with the heat of my two 8800gtx's which are nicer then yours, and my four gigs of corsair 6400 ram which is probably nicer then yours, which im now putting into a water cooled rig which is worth more then your first born son. So, im sorry to say, but your extremely helpful and poinent discussion was ill-advised and poorly concieved when it comes to this particular problem. Ah crap, was that a little blunt? I'll remember to suger coat it. OR maybe you could remember to sugar coat it when your kids serve my kids ice cream

OK, enough is enough or this thread will be closed.
The BFG 1000w PSU has quad +12volt rails and two PCI Express 6-Pin power connectors ensures that any graphics card or other PCI Express add-in card you buy will have its own dedicated power connector for dependable operation. Although relatively new to the PSU market, it has won numerous awards and great reviews. I would put it in the same category as OCZ, Forton, ThermalTake, Cooler Master, Hiper, PC Power and Cooling, Antec. Back to your problem. It really appears it is hanging due to the drivers. I would 1st check to make sure you have the latest BIOS, currently P25 is the latest: Also have you tried removing 2GB RAM to see if the problem goes away? Yes the boards handles up to 8GB, yes VISTA is suppose to handle it, but at least rule this out. |

ARE you are ALSO thinking about timing issues in the bridge, Murf?
if the two cards really use different subversions of HWIDs, they will most probably also use different timing sets. water cooling is good, but the old tip about getting rid of built up heat in the case will still apply too. |

Jaak,
Yes thought about it, and worth checking, I was going to suggest the next step would be Directx. Geforce 8800 GTX supports DirectX 10, an exclusivity for Vista only. Do you have Directx 10??? Back to timing: Birdmw how does your BIOS handle this??? Do you do manually or use AUTO? |

And uh, the jokes on you. I dont have kids. Im only 20. So before you go assuming more ****, think about the possibilities first before you spew more crap out of your mouth. |
