Help with router/ TCP address pls

Hi, i am having a problem using soulseek at the moment as it tells me either my internet connection is up or the server is down but i know neither of these is true. I visited www.portforward.com where i read that i need to change the tcp/ listening port number but the number i need is dictated by which router i have. can someone please tell me how to identify which router i am using or offer any alternative solutions.
Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome

Are you using a router?
This would be a box between your Modem and the PC

Modem ------ > Router ------> PC

thanks for responding.
i guess from what you're saying i've got a little confused on what a router is, anyway do you know what a listening port is?

this is the advice i got:

On this page you should see a Listening Port box. This box contains the port number that Soulseek will use. You can set this number to whatever you want. Write down or remember the number in that box. That is the port number that you will need to forward from your router to your computer's ip address. You need to forward the TCP protocol of that port, so remember that as well. Now go find your router on our forwarding page. Use that guide to forward the Soulseek port.

do most home pcs have routers?
cheers

I'll let Degsy continue here, but I'm guessing it it will help out if you can tell us what the make and model of the 'network box' that your computer is connected to. (I think you may be using a modem/router combo, but I can't be sure)
