Unhappy Windows XP wont boot (even into safe mode)

I have a Compaq Presario that came with Millenium and I upgraded to XP Pro. I am not sure what happened (whether it was due to a power failure during booting or virus related) but now I cannot boot the computer. When I try to boot into safe mode I get the following:
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\hal.dll
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\KDCOM.DLL
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\BOOTVID.dll
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\cofig\system
multi(0) disk(0) fdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\cofig\system.log
and it will not boot up.
I may have made it worse when I used the XP recovery cd and ran fixboot and fixmbr?? I should have tried booting to safe mode first.
What should I do next?? I also ran dskchk /r from the recovery prompt.

Hi Shawshank63,

First, see if you can boot into Last Known Good Configuration. If that doesn't solve the problem, follow the instructions in the MSKB article for How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP. If that doesn't solve the problem, or you're unable to boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, then read over, definitely print, and follow the instructions in this MSKB article:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

You're welcome

I had to follow that procedure just a few nights ago when I was unable to boot into XP in any available mode, and a repair install resulted in STOP error, also.

Let me know how you fare with it.

Well as it turns out on my second and final attempt to do a repair install it worked. Not sure why it did not work the first time? But I thank you for the advise anyway. Cheerio

You're welcome for the advice, and I'm glad to hear that a second attempt at a repair install worked
