I've had this happen on machines were web pages had been saved with a default filename (i.e., it takes the first line of the object and sticks .htm on the end). This can be a massive amount of characters for a file name.
That's what I encountered, but there are many other possibilities (which I have no experience of).

Also worth giving the drive in a question a thorough check for virus/trojans etc which could cause a pause in a file compression routine.

Thumbs up

There are a couple of software packages that can assist you. First go here:http://www.tune-up.com/ and download the software. Run the one click maintenance.

Then download the diskeeper software at this site :http://www.execsoft.co.uk/html/home_user/homeuser.htm

The diskeeper software is a defrag application that that is far superior to anything I have found. When I first used it, I found that is made my computer 30% faster.

Let me know how you come out and if I can help.
