Removing Vendor Added Programs

I just purchased a Toshiba laptop with Vista. I haven't opened it yet in case I decide to return it. The Circuit City rep tried to convince me to spend an additional $120 to "clean up" Vista and remove all the added on programs. I said no, but is it really that big of a deal to get rid of stuff on Vista?

I said what about just going into msconfig and not starting the programs up, like I do on XP, or going into the delete programs routine. He told me it's not that easy. That I could crash the system if I tried it myself. Is this guy legit, or is Circuit City just trying to get easy money from their customers?

Vista is no different to XP when it comes to disabling startups or uninstalling programs Rick.

Thank you. I also heard similar comments to yours from a Best Buy rep, who showed me in fact that you could do an msconfig and uncheck things you didn't want to run. I would say the Circuit City guy was either out and out lying to me or ignorant. I wonder if the $120, 4 hour service he wanted to sell me had anything to do with it? Best Buy will do the same thing for $30 in about 45 minutes, but I think I can handle it myself. Thanks for your input.

There is always "The PC Decrapifier" , a program that's mainly designed to run on a new pc for just that reason, although I have run it on established pc's with success.

You can read/purchase/download it here:

Took me ten to twenty minutes to remove unwanted programs from my Dell desktop, without help from any outside software. That included going through registry manually and removing any remaining traces. Took slightly longer on my previous desktop, an HP. But then it had a lot more garbage on it, including games. Dell had mainly trial programs like Symantec security, MS Office and one or two others.
