Hi murley, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

We want to check your version of IE(Internet Explorer). This will
tell us where you stand as far as versions of libraries and
*.DLL(Dynamic Link Libraries) you have.

To do this;
Open Internet Explorer...in the menu
Help
About Internet Explorer

The first thing that is under the Internet Explorer logo is
Version:*.**.****.****

What Version number are you showing there?

For your connection problem you don't have to reboot the computer.

Start(button)
Run...
type winipcfg
click OK(button)
it default starts on PPP Adapter.
click and change to ethernet card
click Release(button)
click Renew(button)
wait for IP address to reappear and pointer to unbusy itself
click OK(button)

i followed the directions from spider. result - the first time, it worked for about 2 minutes and then i couldn't connect to a server. so i tried it again and it didn't work the second time. the ip address stayed the same after i released it and renewed it. i just finished rebooting my system to get my connection back up and running and i checked my IP it's the same one as before the reboot, but right now it's working for me.

i dont understand why this is happening.
thanks for your help

Not likely, they either work or they don't. If the card is recognized by
the operating system and you can connect, the card works. Do you
have the latest driver for that card?

p.s. If you have Dolby Digital in the bios disable it.

Edited for p.s.

nope, just the BSOD with the fatal exception information. i can try to hit any key to make it go away, or i can hit control alt delt to restart. hitting any other key does not make this go away. hitting control alt delt restarts, but if i try to boot to normal mode i get the error again. so i boot up in safe mode, then restart - the pc boots right up without problem after all that.

it did find a crupt file and i fixed it. i didn't get to write it down, i clicked too fast. i think it had something to do with a "setup" file and it had .dll behind it. i think. can you explain this to me though. why can i use internet explorer for a few minutes, close it, play a game or whatever, come back in an hour, use ie again without problem? but i cannot have ie running for any good length of time without losing the ip.

i dont know if the fix you last listed worked or not, i'm fixin' to find out.

thanks
