Booting takes a long time
Hi,
This just started for me for about a week now, I'm running windows98se with a 500mhz computer, 256 megs of ram and a 20 gig hard drive, anyhow in the past week or so I have noticed that when I go to start the computer the splash screen comes up and the hard drive light blinks, then the splash screen comes up again and the computer stalls for about 70 seconds then the hard drive light starts to flicker again and it starts to load normally. It's almost like it's trying to start something that don't exsist anymore and it gets hung up??? I don't know if this is relaterd to it but I run IE 6.0, and lately I have been noticing that when I go to click on a link it sometimes takes 30 to 40 seconds before it goes to that page, not load the page but that long just to start the modem talking again, it just sits there like it's dead then all of a sudden it clicks and starts loading the page, it just started doing this the same time the slow boot started. Until all of this the system ran good for it's age. any ideas would help, I don't want to have to do a full system restore, it would take me three days to get it updated from the old garbage that the unit came with, it's a HP Pavilion, about 2 1/2 years old, and I have all of the updates on it that HP put out, from the bios to the modem to the video. Thank you! ![]() |

Let's see what is loading at startup, Go here and download, unzip and run StartupList. Copy and paste the results in a reply.
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html Also run scandisk and defrag. |

First culprit, look at your startup list. What's loading there? Also, with a Ctrl|Alt|Del, whats running?
[Edit - didn't see tb525's excellant advice. Sorry!] |

Here is my start up list: I also run defrag every other day and i use adaware, and I use Norton's virus software and it's up to date and I use a program called Swat it, searches for trojans and bots.

That's a good clean startup, i don't see anything that should cause problems.
Some other things to try, Repair IE, Open Add/Remove programs and double click on Internet Explorer and choose 'repair'. Look in the device manager for any yellow ! or ?. Download and run jv16 Power Tools and give the registry a good cleaning. AnnMarie's instructions for jv16: Install then restart your computer. Shut down everything in systray that will close and make sure that your browser is closed and you are off the net. When you open the program, click on Registry Tool. It will give you a complete listing of the programs on your computer. Search that list VERY carefully and make sure that you put a checkmark in front of the ones that you KNOW that you dont have anymore (previously uninstalled) then click "Remove". On the same screen, click "Tools" then "Registry Cleaner". Make sure that there are checkmarks in "I want to manually verify deleted entries", "Show why each item should be safe to remove" and "Dont pop up the registry cleaner after scan". Make sure that the other options are NOT checked. Click "Continue", and make sure that all the options in the next screen are checked and then click "Continue" again and let it find everything that its going to. Click "Select", then “Special Select” and click "All items that are safe to remove"" and then "Remove". Close that screen While you are there, you might as well clean up your drive. Click on "File Tools". Go to Preferences and make sure that you select "Create a backup" Now choose your Source (drive) and select "Find Only Broken Shortcuts". Let it find them, "Select", "All" and "Remove" (at the bottom). Click on Find Broken ShortCuts again to unselect it and then do the same thing for "Temp Files" (dont use the other selections unless you really know what you are doing). |

Hi, well I did everything you listed in your post, step by step, some nice power programs ![]() when the sytem reboots and is totally loaded my system resources are at 77%. But I still have that "boot" stall I was telling you about, where when the splash screen comes up it sorta stalls for quite awhile then the hard drive starts moving again. I timed the cold boot on my computer, heres how fast it is: from the time I push the power button to the first beep it is 15 seconds, then in 1 minute and 23 seconds you will hear the windows tune, then in 2 minutes and 10 seconds the computer is ready to go and no more hourglass on the curser. I don't know if that slow to load is normal or not, but this unit never was that slow to complete it's boot and it never stalled after the splash screen before. So far the internet repair seemed to work, when I click on a link it will go there instead of stalling for 30 seconds or so, but that varies cause sometimes it will do fine then I'll get those dead clicks that just sit there until it starts to load the page in 30 to 45 seconds. So I'll have to surf awhile to be able to conclude that, that problem is gone ![]() ![]() Oh one more thing, when I was doing the registry clean up and such and I had everything shut down like you said, and I went to shut down the computer the "fatal exception errors" came up, here is the numbers: 017F:BFF9DFFF and 17A7:00002A30, they kept repeating themselfs until I did a hard shutdown by holding the power button in to shut the computer down, then I rebooted and all was well. Thank you for your response |

Try doing a 'logged boot' then read the bootlog.txt and see if it shows anything.
To do a logged boot, tap the F8 key like you are going into safe mode. choose 'logged boot' from the start menu. In the meantime I'll be looking into those errors. |

To start off I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to walk me through this!! I appreciate it!! OK, I did the Bootlog.txt thing and boy is it a big file, I went through the whole thing and copied and pasted all the bad things i found in the bootlog.txt, so here is what I found: [00012E65] Loading Vxd = ndis2sup.vxd [00012E65] LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd [00012E87] Starting Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0) [00012E87] Started Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0) [00012E87] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0) [00012E87] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0) [00012E87] Starting Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [00012E87] Started Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [00012E87] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [00012E87] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0) [00012EBB] Dynamic load device [00012EBB] Dynamic load failed : [00012EBB] File not found [00013111] INITCOMPLETE = SDVXD [00013111] INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD LoadStart = arialals.ttf LoadFail = arialals.ttf Failure code is 0002 LoadStart = arialalt.ttf LoadFail = arialalt.ttf Failure code is 0002 That is all that I found in the bootlog.txt, what i am wondering is what is that HTREE, the unknown up there? And also my internet surfing has gone back to like it use to which is good for dial-up, I don't have the freeze ups or page stalls like I did before you gave me the tips, i thank you on that alone!! I would like to clear these problems up above but how do I do it or should I even bother? Thank you! |

Try this, Boot into safe mode. Do you get any hesitation?
Then, boot into Windows and change the display settings to the lowest (640 x 480) and reboot. Any difference in the hesitation? |

Well, before we try updating your video drivers, try one last thing.
Disable these from loading at startup and see if it still hesitates. Keyboard Manager = C:\Program Files\Netropa\One-touch Multimedia Keyboard\MMKeybd.exe NAV Agent = c:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.EXE Tweak UI = RUNDLL32.EXE TWEAKUI.CPL,TweakMeUp washindex = C:\Program Files\Washer\washidx.exe |

Are you using Active Desktop? Also look in the devide manager, are there any yellow ! or ? ?
*edit another thing to do, go here and download and unzip bootlog analyzer. http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ Then run another logged boot. Open Bootlog Analyzer and first check 'show delays' and click start. Once it creates the list, click 'file' and 'save as'. Save it as a text file and open it in notepad and copy and paste in a reply.
