widescreen gone

I hope this is the right place to ask this. Suddenly, with no changes to our computer settings, some of our "full screen" software, such as some games and our screen savers are no longer widescreen or even full screen. I have checked the resolution and it it fine. Is there any other reason why all of a sudden our games and screen saver, which was once full screen, is no longer. By the way we have a Dell inspiron 9100 laptop. HELP!!!

How do I do this? Reinstall the software that came with the computer? I'm learning as I go, so pardon my stupidity.
