modem speed
I have a dynex modem dx-100.
It is rated at 56Kb, but only connects at 33Kb. I suspect the driver is not correct. Is this a realistic assumption Kevin |

It is not a realistic assumption. The modem is capable of 56k speeds, but other factors are in effect here. Phone lines, length of your main line from your house, and length of phone line to your computer. The longer the length of the last two can affect how your modem connects.

Actually what the pc shows as the speed is usually higher than reality, but I have found mostly means nothing at all. Do an online speed check if you really want to see what's happening. www.toast.net is one place to go.

You can set a modem up to show different things.
I had my dialup (whew, glad that's gone) set to show 115000bps. But this was not actual speed. I think the FCC still regulates only 53k as max on a 56k modem. Anyway, as mentioned above, I've seen anywhere from 28k to 49k on different modem setups and locations using good dialup modems. You can tweak to your hearts desire and still not obtain higher than 33k. Some modem strings will/may help a little. Live with it, play with it, but pray for DSL or Cable to come your way soon. ![]() |
