HyperV networking question

I setup a server with windows 2012 STD. Everything was setup and communicating but I had an old program that I needed to run on the server but it only runs in windows xp. So i setup hyperV and created a vm. From what I had read I needed to create a virtual switch on the Windows 2012 and bind it to the nic. On the vm I created a legacy virtual nic adapter and assigned it an IP address. Now neither the 2012 server nor the XP vm will communicate to my network. Any ideas what I have done wrong? I wish xpmode would come back it was much simplier
