pc to mobile phone

Is there any way to send a message to a mobile phone from my pc with free software
just wondered

No. You can buy software to send SMS messages to phones, but they need a subscription to a phone company (the software sends the messages to the company, who then send it through the phone network). Unless you operate a telecommunications network, you cannot do it yourself.

I was just curious. i suppose the phone companies wouldnt be too happy if you started losing them money. thanks anyway

Nope, the phone companies wouldn't be too happy that you couldn't pay your phone bill, because you're billions of dollars in debt from setting up your telecommunications network...

Be careful with instant messengers which send to SMS, as they will often charge a fair bit more than your phone company will, and you usually won't find out until you read the fine print (or get the bill).
