Just a side note, I did do some checks to see if my current laptop spec would be suitable to do a windows upgrade but unfortunately on the windows tool I used it says it isn't suitable. That was the main thinking behind upgrading laptop, operating system etc - my current laptop is almost 10 years old now, so it's getting on a bit.

I tried the CAT program as per normal (without creating another user) first, and it worked without throwing that autoit error.

Some answers to your earlier post.

Windows Defender? It slows things down a lot, and shouldn't be working on the same system with an antivirus program. Uninstall it.

On Windows 7 systems getting updates sometimes takes nearly all night (or more), so not sure how long you have waited before saying updates don't work. Pretty sure MS would just love to just no longer live up to their update agreements, since they earn no money from it.

You can likely upgrade to Windows 7 - most Vista systems can. Supported until 2020 I think. Or offload your personal data temporarily, and install Linux. Simply Mepis works just fine, and Firefox for a browser and LibreOffice that works with all MS Office files.

With CAT completed, I followed on and done the chkdsk /r from cmd prompt, it ran through but took a long time it was fairly late in the evening, so I left it running over night to complete.

When I came to the laptop this morning the normal desktop screen was showing, so I assume all went ok with this, there were no reports or results showing etc.

Hi Tom,

I noticed today upon starting the laptop, it doesn't connect to the internet (no globe icon on computer in the bottom right hand corner of the screen). Once trying to connect to a network, it says there are no networks and that windows wireless network is not running. I click on the windows diagnostics to fix it and it does, then connects fine to my router.

On restarting it does the same. Have you any ideas how to change this back please?

Antivir I have now removed as a few times it seemed to not start or I had to turn it on via the security center, I was getting the red cross in the bottom right hand corner sometimes. After a bit more research I have gone with avast now, this appears to be good and also does the work with windows defender so that gets switched off and no conflicts etc - I'll see how this goes but seems to be running well.

System restore I have tried to load, it still takes about 40 mins before it loads up for some reason, but it does actually come up. I didn't go any further with trying a restore as I didn't want to upset what we are doing here, but I'll take it that it works ok.

I'll try the windows updates and leave it for longer or over night to see if it works, I've probably only left it for a couple of hours or so when I have tried before.

Also have you any tips or places to go to try the windows 7 upgrade from to see if my laptop will accept it as I would like to try this in the near future. I'm sure when I tried this a few months back (a windows upgrade tool of some description) it came back saying my system couldn't be upgrade because of...... I can't remember exact reason though sorry.

I'm going to try the upgrade tool again from windows hopefully today and see what the report will say at the end to find out. If this is possible it may help that I do this too.

VGN-NS20E - Not a bad list of Windows 7 software, especially when it shows graphics support. When Windows 7 came out everyone started calling Vista Windows 7 beta.

As far as no update support after 2017 for Vista, in truth, updates were once terribly important to correct security flaws in Windows. When support for Windows 98 ended, within a week 98 systems were infected due to an ActiveX flaw. But now, malware can infect any system, using any security, so have less a need to seek out flaws any longer. Many folks still use XP.

Not sure I read it - did you try a new user account?

Right click My Computer, left click Manage.

In that menu click Device Manager. Click the + symbol next to Network adapters. Locate your wireless adapter, right click it and select Uninstall. Do Not check the box if it offers to uninstall the drivers/software.

When it's done, restart the system. Windows will see the wireless device, and reinstall the software. See if that corrects the network issue.

Yes brilliant, that's sorted the network issue out. Just set to automatically connect and saved my network and that is back working to how it was. Nice one.

I didn't try a new user account after, as the CAT ran in the end after doing those other fixes. If you want me to do this I can, is that to run CAT on a new user?

The security issues seem fine now, the laptop is feeling much slicker and quicker already to load and operate.

The windows update I can leave over night now to see if that works. The system restore is opening up, but is delayed.

I have got the Windows 7 upgrade files ready for the upgrade. I'm conscious that I don't want to over run what we are doing here, so, should I wait or can I give this a go.

For me, it'll upgrade to a slightly newer operating system and it may fix the delay with system restore and the updates possibly.
