Registry Cleaning - To do or not to do...

Greetings everyone,

What are people's opinions on using registry cleaners? Specifically, Piriform's CCleaner.

I've done a scan, and it came up with a list of issues, which I'll post below. Which are ones that should be fixed and which are ones that should be left alone? Should they all be left alone?

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.

I don't use a registry cleaner, and don't recommend anybody else use one unless you really know what you're doing, because they can cause more problems than you had before.

My opinion was from the voice of experience.
A number of years ago I thought I was being nice to my computer by using a free program called Reg Seeker. I trusted it too much, and had to reinstall Windows, because it really screwed everything up.

Wuff! I can see why you steer clear of them now.

If you mess with registry cleaners, and you indiscriminately delete what it tells you to you better have a clone or an image of your hard drive to fall back on.
That's my rant for today.

Ccleaner is the best one for not messing up your system. I've been using it since they came out with that program and it has never caused me any problems at all.

However like IPR stated. Most will cause you more problems than its worth. I've tried Reg Seeker, Reg Cleaner and many others and they can cause alot of problems.

But, Ccleaner doesn't do the same thing. It gets rid of Junk entries mainly. It is the safest and I always recomend people to use it. Always do the back up when asked. (I do the backup even though I've never had to use it with ccleaner)

BTW, I've used it in XP home/Pro, Vista and Win7 with no problems.

Thanks for the input Dodge. If I were to use one, I would definitely use CCleaner's. I've only had a good experience with CCleaner,and I've used it for a while.

What are the benefits of using the Registry Cleaning Utility in CCleaner? (based on the information it presented, which I posted above?)

It gets rid of false, dead, unused, etc etc entries in the registry. Which can really speed up the registry, speed up loading of programs etc. The registry gets full of Junk over time and can really slow down the loading and usage of your programs and windows in general. By cleaning it out and getting rid of the Junk, it can and will speed things up, and make things work better. (99% of the time you won't notice anything unless the registry is really really bad off and full of junk)

ccleaner is nowhere near doing a full thorough cleaning like alot of Reg Cleaners. Which is probably why it is much safer for regular users. But, it does do a good job and does help clean the house a bit.
