how many processes do I need in background

Task manager shows I have 79 Background processes and 94 window processes is this the cause of my pc being so slow. They all show a very low useage but cumulatively they must add up to a lot.

Well you could see that for normal operation there are a reasonable number running. However the total processes running are only using 2% of CPU and 35% of Memory, perhaps those figures are more significant than the actual number running.

Answers.Microsoft.com > How many background running processes in wondows10
Quote:
Typically Windows 10 can have up to 200 processes running in the background - too many to fit into one screenshot. SvcHost can have 70+ versions running at the same time, this is normal

Windows is not just one application, it is made up of thousands of smaller applications and processes

To minimize any processes you can control in Windows 10:
  1. Turn off all unnecessary startup applications and processes:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
    Click on the Startup Tab
See any non-essential items are listed there
If so, select and click 'Disable'
    Close Task Manager

Click your Start Button, type msconfig and hit Enter
When the System Configuration dialog opens, click on the Services Tab
Check the box marked 'Hide Microsoft Services'
In the remaining list, see any non-essential items are listed there, uncheck any you find
    Click Apply and OK

  2. Turn off all unnecessary Background Apps

    Open the Settings App
Go to Privacy - Background Apps
Turn off any App you do not need running in the background

    Restart your PC

the number of process is the number your specific computer needs to run everything you have installed with the settings you use. There is absolutely no way for anyone to tell you what you need for your specific computer.

It's normal to have a great many of them. As I write this, I have only seven running applications, but 120 processes. And Windows is running just fine. To examine your processes, right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager (Start Task Manager in Windows 7), then click the Processes tab.

Dan is spot on.

There is no way anyone can tell you how many you need in specific numbers. Your system needs what it needs. And that is based on your version of Windows, how your version is configured, how your user account is configured, the programs you have starting with Windows (like your security apps), how those programs are configured (to include their updaters), the other programs you have running, which "housekeeping" chores the OS is currently doing, and what you are doing at that moment in time too.

With this 64-bit, W10 Pro, I have 79 Background processes running, but I have been watching that while typing and it has varied from 78 to 81.

It was apparently there before, as the notice came up that it was unable to open desktop as is either on a hard drive or moved., this pc belonged to a third party so I know little about it I went to put cybertech web page on the desktop only to be met with that notice.
