Motherboard Information

I'm somewhat school/self educated in the area of computers. I have been out of it for sometime (went to school when 586's rolled in). Going to say around 2007 build my own home PC that still rocks for what it was made to do back then has run 24/7 at least half of those years probably no major issues running Windows Vista 32gb.
Sorry to the point I need to re-enter the arena. Scored a what seems like a really nice motherboard (Republic of Gamers ROG, Maximus VII). Would this board be worth the time and effort to build a new system with opinions please as I said I have no clue and kind of hyper (ADHD) and really don't enjoy hours of research to compare more of a hands on needing just a little direction. I like games mostly shooters but others as well mainly into art photography and video though. Thanks for any feedback.

That motherboard comes in a couple of versions. I will assume it is a ASUS
is it the RANGER model? Or the HERO model?

If your going to be doing a lot of gaming.

I'd check the ASUS website for the recommend;
Case & Power Supply
CPU
Heatsink Cooling Setup{Fan or Water Cooling}
DDR4 Memory
Video Card
{It has On-Board 4K HDMI, but most gamer's want to install higher end Video Cards, freeing up the On-Board Memory for the CPU to use.}
Drives

I'd forget about trying to put Vista on this machine.
It will want Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 64bit, or some flavor of 64bit Linux as its OS.

Also........
Check what programs you are currently using.
Will you be able to use them on the new system?
Or if you can get newer versions of the program that will work with the new OS?

Check any devices that you want to still use.
Keyboard
Pointing Device{Mouse, Trackball, Drawing Sketch Pad}
Printer
Monitor
Speakers
Make sure you can get drivers for them for the new OS.
Otherwise you will have to replace them.

No Vista Heck No All New Platform - Setting up a replacement. Will always keep my girl she has served me well but had become obsolete long ago more like a fancy DVD, Electronic Typewriter these days.
I miss the days of old and want to get back into gaming love what I see these days. Was given this board for free and the gears started turning. I assume a good gaming system would serve well for video, for art, photography.
Is the audio on the board, shoot can't remember when. Anyway that's another time anyway.
So sounds like this would be a good start.

I'm no IT tech lol but not bad getting around the basics of MS is Linux that much harder to catch on to? Knew a guy once that had three PC's running, and a laptop worked for a contractor guy looked like a mad computer scientist but the things he could do and find out. Impressed I was to say the least but he seemed to have so much more control over the system than in a MS environment.

Do you have some idea of a budget you want to work towards?
As you are keeping the old girl, you're going to need everything but the motherboard:
Case
PSU
CPU
RAM
GPU
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers/Headphones

It would be pointless us showing you all the goodies that board is capable of and showing you a US$2,000 estimate if your budget is US$1,000.

But yeah, it is a nice modern board and can be the skeleton you can build a real monster on.

Thanks everyone retired now and a lot of time on my hands. Back in the day I enjoysed building my first PC far more than buying a stock unit as I did after building that one, all of which are no more but the one I built still lives lol so sounds like this will be fun but definitely an on going project.

Yeah, rolling your own system still is better than an off the shelf system.

There are still a few places around that do "Bare Bones" systems.
But a lot of them are online.
Newegg, Magic Micro, TigerDirect, etc.....

Use to have a really good computer builder near me.
They'd put together a system while you waited.
Bench test it quick, before you left to make sure everything was working.
Even put an OS on for you.

But thanks to the online stores.
Issues with construction blocking traffic, and more people wanting Pads & Phones, instead of Laptops or a Desk Computers.
They shuttered they're doors.

Now, I still have computer builders around me.
But they have to order parts in, and if I need a part right now.
I could just forget about it, because it is going to take several days to get the replacement part that I needed.
