memory question and problem

I just ordered new memory for my new computer. The system came with 8 gigs of memory DDR3-1600 PC3-12800. I ordered a dual channel kit for 4 gigs more. I added the memory and the computer would not start up it just beeped non stop. So I thought one of the memory sticks were bad so I took out the memory that came with the computer and added the new sticks to see if it would start it did. All in all I came up with the 4th memory slot has a problem and will not boot my computer if there is a memory stick in it. Is this more than likely a defective slot? Also I added just one of the new stick and the system shows that I now have 10 gigs of memory but tells me only 3.8 is available to use ( it has said this since I got the computer)? How is that possible? Any ideas as to what is going on there? How do I tell how much memory I really have to use?

Can you post your system specs?

The most likely reason you only "see" 3.8 gigs of ram is because the OS is a 32 bit version rather than a 64 bit.

we need complete specs (use my signature as a guide for the info needed), or if it's a store bought pc, we need make and model number.
can't really know where to start without knowing the mainboard specs and limitations.

I would use one of the many memory wizards to verify your RAM if the PC or motherboard maker do not maintain a QVL (qualified vendors list) for compatible RAM.

Crucial - Memory Advisor
Corsair - Memory Finder (manual data entry only)
GeIL - Memory Meter
Kingston - Memory Search (manual data entry only)
Mushkin - Advisor

I tried the new memory by it self in the first two slots no problem. I currently now have the original memory in the first two slots and one of the new stick in the 3rd slot. Computer starts no problem. When i tried all four slots the computer would not start and just beeped loudly at me. i tried all combinations with the four slots to no avail. Also dont understsand the only have 3.8 gigs memeory available to use as the system tells me. The computer came with 8 ggis of memory and it stated it then also. Now with 10 gigs in there it tells me it sees the 10 gig but only has 3.8 gig available still. Is there a way i can see if the 4th slot is in fact bad? if it is can i use teh three sticks I have in there now with no problems?

Digerati,
Thanks for the response.
I used Crucial to help me. i actually had to get a hold of a tech there to find what i had in the computer because it was not listed. Thanks for the other sites to look at also.

So with 2 x 4Gb installed in the first two slots, your system sees all 8Gb and reports all (or near all) 8Gb is available, correct?

And when you add the 2 x 2Gb, it only sees one stick for a total of 10Gb, but then reports only 3.8Gb is available?

Is that right?

with 2 x 4Gb installed It shows the system has 8 gigs but says only 3.8 avaialble. I cannot see what it says when all 4 slots are filled. it will not boot up. Now with the two slots filled with the 8 gig and one of the new 2 gb in the third slot it shows 10 gigs available and still says only 3.8 available.

240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module
ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.5V • 1024Meg x 64

DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Your system takes the following:

DDR3 PC3-12800 or DDR3 PC3-1066 NON-ECC

If your using ECC memory then that is the problem.

What is the difference between ECC and Non ECC? Also if that is the case you may not be getting the right info you need when you ask from a memory manufacturer.
