system volume information clogging my HDD

trying to defrag my HDD, I have files that cannot be moved, they are system volume information but they are taking up a good portion of my hard drive, is it safe to remove them or how do I get rid of them?

It holds your restore points, which you don't want to remove, however, you can remove some of the older ones.

The Disk Cleanup Wizard lets you delete all but the latest restore points

Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup

OK, I was thinking along those lines, but I wasn't sure, I did it and got about 260 Gig back for use. Thanks for the help

Yeah, that is a whole bunch of space and not likely much of that was from System Restore as restore points are typically less than 200Mb each. 30 points is just 6Gb, nothing near 260Gb. So that is raising some red flags with me.

It is likely Disk Cleanup found a lot of other junk to clear out - a good thing. Note also, you should ALWAYS run Disk Cleanup BEFORE defragging as it is counterproductive to defrag with potentially 1000s of tiny temporary Internet files, unnecessary cookies and temp files. This is why I am against any defragger that defrags in the background in real-time, or by schedule.

I would keep an eye on your free space to make sure it is not getting eaten up by a misbehaving temp file, or something similar.

Note there will always be unmovable files when defragging. But you can minimize those by defragging in Safe Mode.
