New to Linux? A collection of threads to read first!

Welcome to the world of Linux. Linux, at present, can be a tough thing for a long-time Windows user or non-techie type to get comfortable with.

Don't let the FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, and DOUBT steer you away from Linux...It is a very powerful OS and it is NOT going away.

In order to help those folks who want to TRY LINUX OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME, I have collected together a list of the most informative set of CTH threads that just might answer questions that you have or calm fears as well.

Enjoy!

Matt, half the challenge of Linux is that you do need to do a bit or reading to be able to use it properly. It's not a fly by the seat of your pants O/S.

Point taken though. I may index those threads.

That's sooo right smurfy, I'll give myself another week or two and start posting my problems here. Trying to sort it out myself first. Takes a while to get used to it but I'm not giving up.

I have an old Gateway Frankenputer that I just kicked Bill Gates out of and installed Red Hat 7.2 on. The installation was on cd, but can't play cd's. I configuered sound and heard the test throgh the computer speaker but not the external speakers.I got some books from the library and tried the commands given to configure cd but it didn't work. Also need help configureing printer and getting online. Also can you use a windows machine to download Linux Yellow Dog for an imac?

TIA,
tas3

The Ubuntu challenge may be terrific but when I go into add/remove I still don't understand the difference between, say, 'VirtualBox OSE' and 'VBoxGTK' 'a front end for VirtualBox.
What is a 'front end' ?
