Welcome to the site

Well he likes CLASSIC VIEW (#3) for example which makes it look like an older OS..

Totally what you want when installing

well ,,, i really like this thread , and i wish i can add 1 more tweak -dunno if its been said or no lol :P-

over My Computer icon right click -> properties - > Advanced -> Performance -> Adjust for best performance

dont yet click OK ... from the same windows click on the 'advanced' tab ...

Virtual Memory -> Change -> custom size -> Initial/Maximum (take space from ur hard disk and allocate it as a initial/maximum memory) - SET

ok -> ok -> ok

this is just a quick way for a hardcore working machine ... wish i've added anything ^^

1024 (1G), set it to (1024 x 1.5 = ) 1536, or a little under that.

What I remeber reading is that if you set it higer than that, the system would start taking a lot of HD space, hence take a LOOONG time to read it and you would be back where you started, no page file benifit.

As soon as I find the page Ir ead it in, I'll post it sou you can source it if needs be.

Nice to be back postin'.
THIS ONE WAS THE CREME DE LA CREME! I have 512 RAM, used the 1.5 X 512=768, and set it at 750 (a little under 768). My OLD SETTINGS WERE EXTREMELY HIGH (1500 AND 3500) !!! Zap, Zam, Powie, Wowie! You guys are The Best!

Another 512Mb of RAM is a good idea (the more RAM the better)... turning off the paging file is NOT a good idea. In 99.9% of cases it is best to allow Windows to manage the paging file. Put a dot in the radio box that says "System Managed Size" and forget about it. That way the paging file can expand and contract as needed. Trust me, I'm an inveterate tweaker but this is one tweak best left alone.

i know your reasoning brother, but ...

i have just 1gb of ram in my thinkpad, my pagefile has been off for 6 months, no ill effects, but major improvements in some areas

i am going back to a pagefile, but on a seperate partition so it doesnt fraggle my HD so much

apparently your pagefile should be 1.5 times your RAM allocation

however, if you had a machine with 512ram, this would put the pagefile at 750mb or so

512 + 750 = 1262mb of memory available

if you were to put 2gb of ram in that same machine, and turn the pagefile off, you would have MORE available memory at hand than you ever had, and completely negate any need for a pagefile, no?

lets face it, the pagefile was a bodge job attempt at increasing memory

now that memory is cheap and massive, if you have enough, i think you can safely do away with the bottleneck that is the pagefile

IMHO it is now a redundant antiquated service that stops a computer processing at its fullest potential

please dont be offended

This thread is too much for me to read through right now..

My Faviroute fix is:

1. START + PauseBreak (or right click My Computer Then Click Properties)

2. Advanced Tab

3. Performance - Settings

4. Click 'Adjust For Best Performance'

5. Re-Enable the BOTTOM THREE check boxes in the custom window.

Wez.

Edit: Just read up a little and noticed a very similar entry above ^ .. Appologies..

You are posting in a wrong topic. And I believe we don't support making viruses.

Indexing services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completley unnessesary.
  1. Go to Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
  6. Uncheck the Indexing services
  7. Click Next
That's it, you have now uninstalled the Indexing service, you system will not have more RAM and be more responsive.
Do you mean "your system will NOW have more RAM" etc?
