Computer Science????
I was just wondering if anyone knew exactly what Computer Science was. I was thinking about taking some classes, and was wondering what this was. Can a person get into computer programming with this degree? I've had people tell me that you can get into programming with it, and I've had people tell me it just touches the surface of programming. Does it also involve the hardware aspect of computers? Please help me!!!!
Thanks |

What constitutes Computer Science will vary somewhat from one University to another. The Title Itself is sort of a general catch all type, such as Industrial Management. IM will include among other things, Industrial Enginerring, Business Administration, Accounting, Business Law, and many other related courses.
You will probably find in most cases, the Computer Science will have a similar curriculum, only with Computer oriented courses. Computer programming would be one subject you would take along with some basic theory classes. You will have to be fairly good in Math to do well in these courses. Here is a link to BU which will give you a thumbmail sketch of some of the various classes, and subjects offered. http://cs-www.bu.edu/ Computer Programming is a speciality in itself. It used to be fun with the older machines. However it is more and more getting to be just a job. See if you can get an appointment with the MIS Dept. of some medium size company. Many of them will be only to glad to give you some information as to what you might want to pursue. |

it's best to go around to different universities and see what their computer science has to offer, but all of the unies i've seen with computer science just have it basically with computer programming, as well as parts of robotics, multimedia computing, and some others. If you would like to program for fun, or for a small company, computer science is the way to go. However, if you intend on programming for major companies, or for starting your own business, Software Engineering is best. SE is harder, as it not only includes computer science, but also aspects of project management etc. And I believe with most universities computer science contains aspects of computer hardware as well.
