Advice on RAM configuration please

Hey all

I'm upgrading my gaming rig a little and had a question regarding RAM.

I currently have 2gb 2x1gb hynix(budget ram I'm
Informed?) 667mhz

I'm unsure what option is best for a performance boost

1) buy x2 more hynix sticks totalling 4gb dual channel 667mhz ( I know not all ram used here)
2 buy x2 1gb new corsair xms2 800mhz
3) buy x1 2gb corsair xms2 800mhz

Thanks in advance!

Stick with the 667MHz as it matches your processor FSB: 667mhz x 2 = 1334 and your processor runs at 1333FSB.

Hynix is a value ram, runs ok and works. I would definitely add at least another 1GB or preferably another 2gb. Too each their own on the brand of memory. But if I was a serious gamer I would be running Crucial, OCZ or Corsair Memory.

I think I'd buy 2x 2gigs of the corsair and run dual channel (I know 32bit OS' don't see past 3gig) But if you run 2x2gigs you can run in dual channel mode.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Didn’t not know that murf thanks. I was just assuming that as my CPU FSB was 1333 I could get RAM up to 1333, im intrigued what’s the reason it is multiplied x2.

I’m now looking to Scan to buy the Ram as it seems cheapest and I can get free delivery =) but can only see corsair ram labelled as value! That doesn’t sound very appealing to me.

Double Data Rate (DDR) tecnology allows data to be transmitted twice per clock cycle, so DDR SDRAM with a 200 MHz clock rate actually has a 400 MHz data rate, and is referred to as DDR400. The naming convention for finished modules has become its bandwidth, with each module providing 64 data connections for 8 Bytes of data per transfer. A 400 MHz data rate multiplied by 8 Bytes per transfer provides 3,200 MB/s bandwidth, hence the name PC3200. Applies to all SDRAM +.

Corsair is top quality memory, value as maybe on sale????

MaDef, Vista 32 bit supports up to 4GB (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr..._windows_vista)

Murf,
Curious about your comment on memory choice for gaming. I can see really wanting the high performance memory if you are over clocking, but is there really a big difference between the 'quality' brands if you are not pushing them.

Z1P, probably not, I have used Hynix on several builds and have no problem with it. In fact I have seen corsair with hynix chips on them.

Although I have seen failures with Hynix, but I guess its just as good and any other. However, your right over clockers should not be using "Value Ram", and if you want to adjust timings either Corsair, Crucial, OCZ I think are better. So to answer, no particular reason, just that memory is the "Heart" of a computer, and in my opinion you should not skimp on memory.

DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) 1.8V, with memory frequencies and latency timings...

200 MHz CL3 (3-3-3-9) / 266 MHz CL4 (4-4-4-12) / 333 MHz CL5 (5-5-5-15)

The Hynix "FP-Y5" chip is very over clockable.

Guess I'm rambling so conclusion is Hynix is just as good and any other, unless your pushing the timing and over clocking.

I know zip, but for all intents and purposes, 32bit windows only reports 3-3.5gigs. at least on win2k and xp so the "rest" is pretty much a waste.

YES, as long as the 2-1GB are in the same bank and the 2GB in the other bank.

Banks generally will have different colors. i.e., 2 black and 2 blue.

Ok so now have some cash after crimbo and b-day =) Today im going to buy windows 7 and going 64 bit.

I don’t feel going more than 4gb would be beneficial to me so I will be staying at 4 gb for now.

Looked on crucial and ran there scanner for compatible RAM and only bring back pc2-6400 RAM I’m guessing that this will just be reduced to 677mhz but will not effect performance in doing so?

Is it worth buying all new RAM or just hoping my budget Hynix will be compatible as Crucial suggests?

If you do alot of multitasking it may turn out beneficial, win 7 x64 uses almost 2gigs when it loads on my system (of course most of the system is still @ default settings).

Go to Asus' support page for P5N-E, and check the QVL (Qualified Venders List).

After re-reading your OP, I'm thinking My first answer was a bit off the mark. Since you're adding ram rather than replacing it, stick with the 667mhz DDR2. The faster ram is wasted since it'll underclock to 667mhz. If you are going to replace the ram, then the 800mhz will give you a boost (however slight).

Hi MaDef

Thanks for the info.

I think I will just buy another 2gig of 677 totaling 4gb for now and see how it goes ( might even just stick with the 2gb and see how win7 runs 32bit)

I feel my system can run the games I want to play looking at reqs just maybe not as pretty as I would like! Also im gaming at 1920x1080 so maybe thats my problem! lol
