Unhappy XP shutdown

I have windows XP at home and know nothing about computers. The system has been getting slower especially the last few months and freezes completely at times. Windows will no longer shutdown and I have to resort to switching the system off. Desparately need help.

hello gazza

you first should scan your system for any viruses.
then scan for adware and spyware.

best place to start

hey gazza,
welcome to CTH, for not knowing much about puters (rigs) you sure came to the right site. LOL
there are many free programs that will "eradicate the bad" from your puter, you've been given some excellent advice from phlecs, always update & use your antivirus and your spyware / adaware programs. *reboot when done*
this will help to keep your system clean & lean for better usage. post back if your not sure where to go to download these programs if need.
do you have a firewall?

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

First read the following thread..

http://cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57233

Now, read this thread.. once you have finished following the instructions in that thread, post an HJT log to the Cyber Safety forum and let one of the guru's there take a look at it..

Shutdown and slow PC

Thanks for the replies, it is probaly going to take me a while to understand what you are saying, it is a different language.
I have downloaded some spyware, i think adware was one, i followed instruction from XP for dummies as was worried about downloading stuff.
As i have to send replies from work computer due to home pc probs, i will have a look at what i have in terms of protection over weekend and what i have tried to do.I believe after running adware it stated no problems found, but i am not able to re boot due to this shutdown problem. I will have a look this weekend and try and itemise the problems etc.
It is good to know there are people who can and want to help
Thanks
gazza
