xp shutdown
it only shuts down sometimes,it gets to the screen saying windows is shutting down but doesnt,have looked on microsoft page but nothing there covers it,and googled it with no success.

Your computer could be hanging on software or a driver that doesn't want to let go. How long are you wanting to shut down and what were you doing just before the times it wouldn't shut down right?
