Question How to DISABLE Save password in password list

Hi:

I need to know how to DISABLE the Save Password in password list option when trying to access / authenticate to a server.

We are a healthcare facility and are rolling out task workstations to users. These users will be using IE 6.0 to then access their OWA email. As of right now, users are saving passwords and inadvertently opening the wrong person's email.

How can I turn this option OFF or disable so users MUST enter their own credentials?

Please advise.

Thanks!
Miley...

Hello Miley,

Open up IE - Tools > Internet Options

Click on the "Content" tab.

Click on the "Autocomplete" button.

Untick all 4 boxes and hit OK, Apply, then OK to complete the job.

Hope that helps

Hi MishY:

I tried all that already, with the exception of Applying my changes. I don't have that option. My "APPLY" button is greyed out.

And when I try to authenticate to a server, I still have that darn Save Password option available to me.

Is there a registry setting that I need to change?

Thanks for your reply! Any options are happily accepted!

ah! my apologies are we talking http authentication like htaccess ? My first thought was that you were describing a normal website login form type of authentication and then you are prompted for the save password window. I will have to have a think about that one as I have not tried to do what you need before. Maybe someone else has attempted this and may have some input....

MishY:

I have a tutorial you wrote on 03 June 2002 titled "How to disable the password at Windows startup". I don't have access or can't find most of the things you mentioned in your article. What I want is to remove or disable the "Save password" option for any task workstation that launches any program that requires server authentication.

Some examples of these programs are OWA via Internet Explorer; FrontPage opening a web server; etc. I can't believe disabling this option is so difficult. There have to be other facilities or companies out there that do not want this option enabled for their user base.

Thanks for your assistance. I may have to break down and contact Microsoft over this one!

Here is the link:

MSKB: Q229940 - How to Disable Internet Explorer Password Caching
Quote:
SUMMARY
This article describes how to disable the password caching feature in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

When you attempt to view a password-protected site, you are prompted to type your security credentials in the Enter Network Password dialog box. If you click the Save this password in your password list check box in this dialog box, your computer saves your password so you do not have to type the password again when you attempt to use the same document. This is known as password caching.
MORE INFORMATION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To disable password caching:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: DisablePasswordCaching
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Hexadecimal
Value data: 0x00000001

Quit Registry Editor.
You can also disable password caching by using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to create an executable file, and then attach it as an add-on component. When you use this method, Setup adds the DisablePasswordCaching value to the registry during the installation process.

NOTE: In some cases, you can create a custom .adm file to modify this registry key, and then import it into the IEAK Wizard.

To re-enable password caching, you can either delete the DisablePasswordCaching value, or change the value setting to 0.
