Do you have "Auto Arrange" selected?

Did you uncheck "Align To Grid"? The columns you mentioned are the "grid". Once that is unchecked you should be able to drag and drop your icons anywhere you want on the desktop, and have them stay put.

I just tried it on my own computer. Apparently you have to uncheck BOTH "Align To Grid" and "Auto Arrange", as z1p stated earlier. It worked on mine, although I didn't reboot because I like mine aligned to a grid in certain positions. If I were to reboot after unchecking both options I'm afraid I might end up having to rearrange them all again. Good luck!

Desktop Icons WILL NOT STAY IN POSITION

A good free program to keep your desktop icons where you place them is "Icon Restore".

Download here: http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

I change resolution quite often so my icons have a tendency to get scrambled.

One click with "Icon Restore" installed puts them all back.

Just thought I'd throw this in.

Aclicyano... you mean even after unchecking "Auto Arrange" and "Align to Grid" your icons went back to the left in a grid??? Holy Pete!

Hey! I just realized something... have you tried to move them yet? Even after unchecking everything they will stay in the same place until you move them. Then they "should" stay where you move them to.

Guess what happened to me after unchecking "Align to Grid" to see if it worked on my machine? I rebooted and my icons were all scrambled. Aaarrgh!! Back to normal but I hate rearranging those things.

I hope you're problem is solved now... Mark

Aclikyano... do you have Tweak UI? If not, go to this Link, look on the right hand side of the page, about half way down, and you'll see TweakUI.exe... download it and save to a folder then run it from there. Once it's installed on you system there will be a desktop icon. Open up the program and look all the way to the bottom on the left side. You'll see "Repair"... click on Repair and then look on the right. You'll see a dropdown menu and it should say "Rebuild Icons" in the window. If it says something else click on the arrow to the right of the window to open the dropdown menu. Selct "Rebuild Icons" and click on "Repair Now". After that right click on the desktop, hover your cursor over "Arrange Icons By" and make sure "Auto Arrange" and "Align To Grid" are unchecked. Restart your computer and when it comes back up things SHOULD be working the way you want, ie, you should be able to move your desktop icons around and have them STAY where you put them. Fingers crossed!

the only thing that shoudl be checked, is "aligh to grid" and "show desktop icons". i have noticed something though. sometimes, just sometimes, when i open ie in maximize, it re-arranges my icons, and i have to r-arrange them back to where they were. is your user account a limited account? or admin account?
