Operating system

I have a windows 7 home edition laptop. I can not see any icons at all, nor start bar. When I run startup repair, it gives me my root problem. It states that my operating system is not compatible with my startup repair. I tried to restore to another time, but that doesn't work either. Can you please help me?
Thanks
Donna

Welcome to CTH

I assume this just happened? Your ICON cache may be corrupt.

Try:

1. Open the start Menu | All Programs |Accessories | and the Command Prompt

2. type cmd in the search box and press enter

3. Right click on cmd.exe and hit "Run as Administrator"

Next to the blinking cursor type the following hitting <enter> after each line:

taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F

DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A

shutdown /r /f /t 00

Note: The last command will restart the computer, so be sure to close and save anything that you are working on first.

If you cannot get to the Start button, then try this to get the task bar back:

Hover your mouse at the bottom of the screen and if an arrow appears re-expand it

NO:

Then hit Ctr>Alt>Del keys select run the Task Manager and then File>New Task (run) and then type the following:

explorer.exe in the run box.
