'Error loading operating system' (Moved from XP Forum by AM)
Hello,
I have a Dell Latitude C800 laptop. When you turn it on, the loading screen comes up (with the Dell logo), loads, and then it says 'Error loading operating system'. We brought it to a computer repair shop and they said a part needed to be replaced that was not worth replacing. A relative (who is a computer programmer) who looked at it said it got overheated and the fan wouldn't turn on. I posted about this on another message board a few months ago and someone replied that they thought it wouldn't be hard to fix. Do I need a reboot/install CD or something like that? Do I need to change something in the BIOS? Thanks in advance, Chreldorm |

Howdy and welcome to CTH:
Based on what you have said and what was told you, you could have either lost your harddrive or overheated the CPU (chances are the hdd).. Do you have your Dell Recovery cd handy? Murray |

No cd. Where is it?
Contact Dell and have them send you a replacement. Murray |

We bought the computer online and didn't get any CDs with it. Okay, I'll try to get them to send me one. Thanks so much! ![]() |

I contacted Dell and they said they could only send me a windows 2000 CD and that they no longer sent those.
But ebay had a windows XP recovery disk that I bought, so I should have it in about a week. |

I got the recovery floppy today and when I put it in the following message came up:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file. How would I fix that? |

You need an XP cd to replace the hal.dll, it's on the xp cd not on a floppy. If you bought this recovery disk as a floppy, you got taken. Recovery disks from manufacturer's come on cds not floppys. Actually, they have XP on them and XP won't fit on a floppy. The only other option you have now is buy a full version of XP. Though you might be able to borrow an xp cd from a friend as long as it's the same version as what you have, Home Edition or Pro.

Thanks!
Ratz. I think we have a friend we can borrow a copy of the XP CD from. |
