Microsoft has announced the Windows XP end of support date of April 8, 2014. After this date, Windows XP will no longer be a supported operating system*. To help organizations complete their migrations, Microsoft will continue to provide updates to our antimalware signatures and engine for Windows XP users through July 14, 2015.

Good to see that XP users will still be able to get MSSE updates up to April 2015. Better than nothing at all.

How much would the least cost be to upgrade to Windows 7? Will I lose all my programs on Windows XP?

Before even thinking about upgrading I would run the advisor to ensure your system is compatible with Windows 7;
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...pgrade-advisor Drivers can be a problem, this will tell you if you have a driver problem, then you go to the manufactures page and see if they have Windows 7 drivers for your device. Normally installation of Windows 7 is a "Clean install", it will put everything currently on the computer into a folder called "Old Windows", then you can retrieve what you need. However, you will have to re-install any programs that are dependent on Windows, as they will not work. MS does not support a direct upgrade (preserving programs) from XP to Windows 7, however, it does from XP to Vista then from Vista to Windows 7, but I would not recommend that. |

Far smarter to save your spare cash to purchase a new computer with a compatible operating system installed. You may still be able to get one at the right price with Win7 on it.

Windows XP support
It is very disappointing to know that Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP. Actually it is still popular, even I am using it in my old dell 2100 laptop with Windows XP Home service pack 3. I can switch to other OS but I still love it and will continue. Problem is that you still get some messages about activation or other. Beside that XP works fine for me.
