Something strange...
I recently went on MSN and one of my contacts offered to send a file. He usually sends quite amusing things so I accepted. When it turned up on my desktop I clicked it and only realised after I'd double clicked that it was an MS DOS file and I'm guessing that's quite suspicious. Anyway MSN froze and when I rebooted and went back on I had lots of people saying "what's this file you're sending me?" e.t.c.
I got the recent updates for AVG and Ad-Aware and scanned. AVG found no virus/es in normal OR safe mode and Ad-Aware only found what I'd consider to be one fairly suspicious file. Does anyone here know what I could be dealing with here? Here's a HT log and I see some strange things on there: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0 Scan saved at 00:12:29, on 26/01/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\BIN\INSTAN~1.EXE C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\DragToDisc\DrgToDsc.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\AudioCentral\RxMon.exe C:\WINDOWS\SM1BG.EXE C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslstat.exe C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslagent.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.3000.1001\en-gb\msnappau.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\NOMAD Jukebox 3\PlayCenter2\CTNMRUN.EXE C:\daemon.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\AudioCentral\Playlist.exe C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Express 2 SE\CalCheck.exe C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32\1200 UB\WATCH.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zonealarm.exe C:\Program Files\BT Broadband\Help\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - However I'd rather not go on MSN until after this seems to be sorted and Zonealarm keeps blocking internet explorer lots, which is a bit scary. |

It looks like you will need to download LSPFix from here http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

OK thanks, but it says that something about Ad-Aware not working and losing internet access. How can I avoid this? The only one it says I should remove is the xfire one.

There should be no problem having it fix/remove the xfire one.
Try to update and run AdAware, spybot, AVG Then post a new HJT log in this thread and any problems/errors you had. Last edited by dahli; January 26th, 2005 at 02:44 PM. |

xfire one is a valid lsp no need to fix it, HJT can't define between a bad and a legit
Go Here BitDefender Scan Online Run a scan with BitDefender, Be sure and Check Auto Clean. Next: Go here and do an online virus scan Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan Be sure and check Auto Clean before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself. There is something in your log lets see if we can shake it out with one of the online scans |

Don - I searched through other CTH posts and other sites and I could not find one that said LSPFixe should not be used to fix
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'xfire_lsp_10226.dll' missing Please enlighten me on why this is different now. |

Before to fix a O10 line, search if the dll comes from a valid program, and ask if this program is stil used. If no, then you can fix it, else let it, even if the line reports "Broken Internet access....". In this log, the culprit is here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\iexplore.exe because the valid iexplore.exe is in c:\program files\internet explorer. Cheers. |

I'm pretty sure Xfire means no harm. It's a program that tells you what games friends are playing so you can join them on that game if you want to. I deleted it though, so I guess that's why it might say it's broken?
Anyway I'm doing the BitDefender scan now. I'll post back what, if anything, it finds. |

Ah, right so I should fix the two iexporer things in HT, boot into Safe Mode and delete the iexplorer in the Windows file?

Hi Daniel,
No, wait for Don77 instructions. I only answered to Dahli. Then, scan with BitDefender and TrendMicro as requested by Don. Cheers. |

Bitdefender found some stuff, which I deleted manually. Trend Micro seems far better, though. Found a worm straight away and found the iexplorer one called WORM SDBOT.AKO

AHhhhhh also I found WORM BROPIA.D in 4 files all in the System Volume information folder. Deleted it, though. OK here's a new log:

Hi daniel101
Nice job of ridding the worms!! To help prevent re-infection, take a trip to Windows Update and make sure that all your Critical Updates are installed, more information here Microsoft Security Home Page. Also go here and download and install Spyware Blaster. Adding the MVPS Hosts file will also help block unwanted parasites. Tighten up IE's security settings. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and make sure that "Install upon Demand" and "Install upon Demand (other)" are not selected. Now go to Internet Options > Security > Custom and set "Download Signed ActiveX Controls" to Prompt. "Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as Safe" and "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" should be disabled. Set "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" and "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" to enable. Run Ad-Aware or Spybot regularly. NB. It is important to make sure that you go online and install any updates first. If your OS is Windows XP or Windows Millenium, flush all restore points after cleaning your PC to prevent infected files being restored, see here or here for more information. Let us know if you have any further problems, BTW Acrobaze Thanks for keeping a watch on this thread for me. Been busy the last few days,,, |

Heheheh cheers. Hmmmmmmmmmmm......I was going to post back and say "I still have iexplorer infected, though" but it appears to have stopped bugging Zonealarm.....and with a brief scan through that HT log I can't see it......Cool hehehe. Dunno how I got rid of it. Trend Micro said it couldn't delete it or disable it.
