Self inflicted XP trouble, PLEASE HELP!

Well, today I am thankful for the relative anonymity of the web. Earlier this afternoon I screwed up while putting my dell latitude D520 w/ windows XP in to hibernation. As I was closing programs I had one in particular that was hanging up and not responding. This is where major brain fade kicks in, while waiting for the program to close, I hit the power button to put the computer into hibernation. What I did not realize is that the cord had come out of the socket courtesy of our cats and a loose outlet. Unfortunately, my battery holds almost no charge and by the time I realized what was going on I had lost power completely. when I turned the computer back on I got the following message on a blue screen: "Technical information: STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component} This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I cannot start in safe mode or in last known good configuration. I am assuming that a file must have been corrupted when this stupidity took place. My question is, will a repair install of XP resolve this? Please help! I am desperate to get back on my laptop as it has all my work related materials on it. I do have probably 90 % backed up but I don't want to loose anything if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance for any help or advice anyone can provide.

Indy

A repair install can help.
You will need to reinstall hardware drivers.
You may want to try checkdisk first.
Boot to the windows CD and hit R to enter the repair console.
If you have a SATA drive, you may need to hit F6 during boot
and have the driver ready.
Type chkdsk /r at the prompt and hit enter and let it repair the drive.
Then try rebooting.
If no go,go for the repair install.

Tried the chkdsk /r tonight and got the following BSOD about 55% into the check: "
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
"The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys"

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATI ONS

Stop: 0x000000CE (0XF87CD667, 0X00000000, 0XF87CD667, 0X00000000)
partmgr.sys

Where do I go from here? is the repair install my only remaining option? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Indy

Yes,looks like you need a repair install.
Some system files got corrupted due to improper shutdown.
