Norton has tried my last nerve...
I downloadedNorton Security Suite last April. It gave me a couple error messages about Liveupdate not working, but I figured I could work it out thru support, so didn't think twice about it. Well, I gave up trying to fix it around August. I logged in about 7 days worth of tech suport thru there online and phone sites. Everything that their technicians told me to do failed to solve the problem. My liveupdate has never worked. What's worse is that it is interfering with my downloading other programs. Recently I tried to download a fantasy baseball update for an applic. i've had for two years and the download wouldn't work. I downloaded it onto my other computer jsut fine (i don't have norton on that computer!). I'm tired of this. I've tried to uninstall it and then reinstall and that doesn't work. I've tried uninstalling it and then trying to install the other software without the norton on there but the fantasy applic. won't work. I don't know if it's related to the norton, but i do know that my computer worked just fine until last april with that norton download. I'm to the point that I will happily wipe everything off the dard drive and start with a new computer. I just don't know how to do that. I'll take any suggestions...I'd prefer to start fresh with nothing on my computer. I've got everything backed up. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Where's the option for "satisfied"? I used Norton in the past with no problems; I wouldn't go so far as saying I loved it, but it was ok.

The first option (No, I love Norton!)
Norton is on 1 computer upstairs (XP) and it got corrupted or something and had to be re-installed...... Last edited by The Dude; February 16th, 2007 at 12:07 AM. |

I'm having the worst problem...I can't even uninstall mine. I'm afraid I have to use the system restore(the last resort) and it sucks because now I might have to waste money getting an external harddrive to save my data. You dont know how bad I hate Norton right now...

Try contacting norton. I haven't had any problems with the norton on this pc. You can chat for free with them, and get the uninstall tool. And i uninstalled my retail version just to check if there were any problems, zero.

If you want to do a clean install (wipe the hard drive of everything) and start over, Click Here to open a detailed guide on how to do that.

Uninstall tool does not help, because it wont open when I click it, I downloaded it multiple times but it still won't work.
I don't know if I want to perform a clean install, I leave that for the last resort. |

Try opening task manager and ending task on Norton (ccapp.exe) and all other norton processes (Im not sure of the rest of the names)
Once its not running, you should be able to dump it.. Good luck! |

Before doing a full install
Before anyone does a full install
1. Backup your Documents & Favorites a) C:\Documents and Settings\%Profile%\My Documents b) C:\Documents and Settings\%Profile%\Favorites 2. Backup your Outlook Express Files a) C:\Documents and Settings\%Profile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book b) C:\Documents and Settings\%Profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities 3. Backup your Outlook 97/2000/2003 a) C:\Documents and Settings\%Profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook 4. Backup ALL your DRIVERS to USB JumpDrive or CD using DRIVERMAX. This program makes a backup of all your drivers to specified location. It copies all necessary files (.exe, .ovl, .dll, etc.) to get your computer up and running without downloading or going crazy looking for them. a) Download DRIVERMAX |

it's a major pain this - you have to disable all the active Norton apps in your system tray, even though it tells you it hasnt disable one of them (sorry can't remember which).
then remove via Add/Remove progs reboot disable anything in sys tray again add/remove reboot should be clear now. If you've still got symantec components in there, you're going to have to look up a hack to clean it from your registry. I used to have a link to it, but I can't seem to find it right now. |

I've made quite a bit of money "fixing" systems on which Norton was installed.
The ones with problems had one or more things in common...listed here in the order of most common first. 1. A newer version was installed on an older machine that didn't have the power to handle it, slowing the system to a crawl. 2. It was installed on a system already infected. 3. The user didn't know how to install any software to start with and somehow managed to click on the wrong things at the wrong time. On the other hand, I have plenty of customers happily running Norton with no problems at all. The majority of those have systems on which a trial version of Norton was preinstalled at the factory. Most pay the subscription fee, a few are stunned to find out that their years-old trial version isn't offering them enough protection to count. |

Thanks Snurfen. Your hack worked very nicely in getting an old expired copy of Norton off a WinME system. I wish I had known about this earlier. It would have saved me lots of time re-installing the OS on my laptop after removing Norton screwed up things.
Its quite amazing what is left after you use the "uninstall" feature. Shouldn't uninstall take everything out, or is that intentional to clutter your system and make it unmanageable? |
